Martin Scorsese and Robert De Niro, an inseparable couple
Before their association in The Assassins of the Flower MoonRobert De Niro and Leonardo DiCaprio could have said the line in an earlier Martin Scorsese film: Infiltrators. In 2005, when the film was about to be shot, Robert De Niro had already made eight films with Martin Scorsese: Bad roads, Taxi driver, New York, New York, wild bull, The Waltz of the Puppets, The Freedmen, Nerves on edge AND Casino. Leonardo DiCaprio has already made two films with the director, New York gangs AND Aviator. Robert De Niro and Martin Scorsese haven’t toured together since 1995 and Casino. The actor does not appear Kundunor inside Open tombin short, he no longer appears in a Martin Scorsese film during 24 years, Until The Irishpublished in 2019. The two men, iconic duo in the history of cinema, were they cold then? For nothing.

“No, I don’t want to do that.”
The ties between Martin Scorsese and Robert De Niro have never weakened. And how the Italian-American director said it in an interview with Deadline, has always suggested Robert de Niro to collaborate on his projects. This was then the case InfiltratorsThat however, the actor refused.
We talked to Bob about it, but he didn’t want to do it. You see, there are some people that I work with a lot because I realized that I was… on the fringes, in a way. By “on the fringes” I mean there are a lot of actors I would have loved to work with all these years but… I don’t fit the way the industry works. (…) I didn’t work with Bob for almost ten years before making “Goodfellas”, each of us went in a different direction. Then we made two more films, and then we didn’t work together again for 19 years (24 years actually between the release of “Casino” and that of “The Irishman”, ed.).

You know, people change. Bob always wanted to do certain things. “Casino” was the best example for me. It was the pinnacle, in terms of film genre, for him and for me. (…) But we have always asked ourselves this question, for everything. He wanted me to do “Mafia Blues,” I told him, “We already did that “The Free“.” I was talking to him about other projects and at a certain point he said to me: “You know very well what kind of films I like to make with you.” I said “Okay” and we got to “The Irishman,” which took nine years. How about “The Departed”? It was, “No, I don’t want to do that.”
A frank and demanding collaboration
Martin Scorsese then says that Robert De Niro also rejected his invitation to participate New York gangs. Thus a system emerges: the two men know exactly what they can do and succeed together. So instead of forcing each other to do everything together, and even if they systematically suggested it, each was able to refuse the other the project in which they did not see themselves as participating. So Martin Scorsese said no to Robert De Niro Mafia bluesand the actor said no to the director because, among other things, Infiltrators. They collaborate, of course, but on a project that suits both of them. And as the director specifies, he had wanted to work with Jack Nicholson for years. The latter served him well, with his unforgettable performance as the furious Irish crime boss Infiltrators.
