The film Veronica is inspired by a mysterious true story, which took place in the Spanish capital in the early 1990s.
The Vallecas case, or the “Veronica case”
The Vallecas affair, also called the “Veronica case”, is an unprecedented event in Spain. For the first time supernatural phenomena were officially acknowledged in a police report. It all began in 1990 in Madrid, when Estefania Gutierrez Lazaro, an 18-year-old girl, interrupted a Ouija session. She is later tormented by menacing shadows that call to her at night. These apparitions make her increasingly terrified, pushing her into violent outbursts. Despite numerous medical tests, her condition worsened, causing her to fall into a coma from which she did not wake up. Although doctors speak of cardiac arrest, the family doubts the veracity of this conclusion.
After Estefania’s death the strange phenomena continue. The family hears voices, sees doors opening and closing violently and shadows similar to those described by Estefania torment them. The atmosphere became so oppressive that the father decided to call the police in November 1992. When they arrived, the same officers witnessed supernatural manifestations, including an inexplicable freezing cold. The final police report acknowledges the existence of inexplicable phenomena, marking a historic first for Spain.
Unfortunately, the movie Veronica is not available on Netflix. If you’re curious, it’s available for purchase and rental, or on the Shadowz platform.
