Jess Bush knew she had to wear these big shoes when she was cast as Nurse Christine Chapel. Star Trek: Strange New Worlds. After all, the only actor to play this cult role was the legendary Majel Barrett-Rodenber, whose major contribution to the sci-fi franchise with her husband, creator Gene Rodenber, has led to her being called “the first”. Mrs. ᲕThe way of the stars.”

Bush both loved and respected Barrett-Rodinber’s work on the original. ᲕThe way of the stars Between series, among various other franchise projects, I knew that some of the remnants would shine in their incarnation. But the Australian-born actress also figured out how to make Nurse Chapel her own. He did just that in the Paramount+ series.

the hollywood reporter Chat with Bush ahead of this week’s episode of “Serene Squall” to explore many topics, including how the actress was ready to step up her career when the series launched. In the same talk, Bush explored the two versions of the hereditary character and discussed the origins of the love triangle between Chapel, Spock (Ethan Peck) and T’Pring (Gia Sandhu).

I love hearing how you’ve become involved in each TV series. What is your casting history?

I knew this before I acted. ᲕThe way of the starsOf course, because it’s so pervasive in our global culture. But I had no idea how big the world was until I got the part and all these Trekkies didn’t show up around me. It was as if he had entered that mysterious world that exists between us. It was a wonderful walk, I learned everything. ᲕThe way of the stars And its cultural context and everything it has been fighting for for over 55 years.

As for taking on my role, it’s been a while since I’ve had a conversation with my managers about stepping back. I was at a point in my life where I was feeling really tired and tired of the noise, and I had a conversation to say I wanted to relax a little. I said I just want to go to the things that interest us and lo and behold, they came out with this audit. ᲕThe way of the stars Series. So I did something and about three weeks later I got a call to meet with Zoom. [co-creator and executive producer] akiva [Goldsman], [co-creator and EP] Alex [Kurtzman] s [EP] Henrique [Alonso Myers]. So I have blood! (laughs.) I didn’t find out it was a nurses’ chapel until I made the deal!

Nice! This brings me to my next question: you probably have the greatest heirloom shoes. Majel Barrett-Rodenberg is a ᲕThe way of the stars The icon for many reasons. Where did you start your research and so what was the process of becoming a chapel nurse for your own future?

It is a great honor to be the second actress to play Nurse Capel after Majel Barrett. I guess I was lucky in the sense that I didn’t know ᲕThe way of the stars For starters, it wasn’t particularly absolute. I saw all your performances. I also read nursing memoirs and continue to read a variety of materials that illustrate what it was like to be a doctor in different situations, such as Medevac’s situation.

About how many nurses Chapelle goes through in this current iteration was a conversation with Aquila and Henry. It was a balance between the homage to the Magalhães Chapel and its novelty. Majel Chapel really had a clear essence about her, but there were still so many places to study her history, her, what she was like in her youth, what she could be like in our youthful days, and they gave me so much. Study licence. It was a fun and collaborative conversation.

Do you have a favorite feature from the Chapel of Magellan and a favorite feature from your Chapel of Nurses?

Majel Chapel is really dry and sarcastic, which is what I love. That was the main thing for me and it evokes my favorite aspect. strange new worlds Chapel: Humor. It’s humor as it is in a young girl. Use this humor to spoil people’s feathers to find out more about them. He has this sense of humor and is driven by curiosity.

With the release of this week’s episode, it was wonderful to see that he can take care of business and quickly eliminate these two pirates. To what extent did you know that this physical episode was on its way?

My God, it was filmed so long ago that I can’t remember what we did before the episode started. I remember shooting and doing maneuvers that excited me. I’m a very physical person and it’s very fascinating to jump in and use my whole body. I left with a piece of gum, but with a full heart. It was very funny. (laughs.)

It looks like a love triangle between Chapel, Spock and T’Pring is falling apart. How do you deal with or prepare for that subtle but much more obvious emotional kiss this week?

I look at the writing. It’s so good that its complexity often emerges organically through characters that only develop side by side. Ethan and I are good friends, so it’s very convenient to study this complexity in order to develop it, as this story is developed on a practical level. Such scenes are considered up to t. She was coordinator and director of intimate relationships. [Sydney Freeland] Explain what you wanted visually from the kiss. After we did his heavily choreographed version, Ethan and I played comfortably freestyle and saw what else was going on.

I liked the first scene that Ethan and I had together in this week’s episode where we walk down the aisle together and he tells her about his relationship with Tipring. Chapelle went through hard times, but kindly. I think at this point in the episode, a wonderful friendship developed between the first six episodes. I thought it was a good exchange between the two, very gentle and affectionate, but you can also feel the chemistry that both decide to do nothing at this point.

Finally, do you have a favorite moment when the cameras weren’t rolling? Your actors have told me that they are all very close and genuinely enjoy each other’s company.

I am very happy to be part of this product. In particular, the actors and crew are wonderful and I think the values and stories of this show that we’re telling are also behind the scenes. This is a very supportive group and there is a lot of heart in the team. Every day is a beautiful and safe place to create. There is no weird policy, everyone is just there to make sure everyone feels as safe and understanding as possible.

It’s very rare that we’re all on set at the same time. On days when we’re all there, there are usually very low stakes, and we absolutely have fun, cranking up the speakers, talking, buying food. Chris [Chong] He brings his dog, Runa Evok, and we throw him the ball. These are the days when I feel like “I don’t think I’m being paid for this”.
