In addition to playing a vital role in speech, chewing and breathing, the mouth is the largest cavity in the body.

Did you know that the mouth performs important functions that affect the health of the whole body? In addition to playing a fundamental role in speech, chewing and breathing, the mouth is the largest cavity in the body to have direct contact with the environment, being the gateway to bacteria and other microorganisms that are harmful to health.
Therefore, it is essential to maintain good oral hygiene, brush your teeth at least three times a day and always use dental floss. It is also important to maintain healthy habits, avoiding smoking, heavy alcoholic beverages and ultra-processed foods.
The most common diseases of the mouth are listed below:
Caries: tooth disintegration caused by inadequate hygiene, ingestion of sweets and carbohydrates, or even complications of other diseases that reduce the amount of saliva in the mouth. (Eg: people undergoing chemotherapy or radiotherapy for cancer).
Mouth ulcers and canker sores: bumps, spots or sores on the mouth, tongue or lips; it can be caused by cold sores, candidiasis (thrush) and unsuitable dentures (dentures).
Halitosis: has several causes, including: inadequate oral hygiene; gingivitis; ingestion of certain foods such as garlic or onions; tobacco and alcoholic products; dry mouth; systemic diseases such as cancer, diabetes, liver and kidney problems. The tongue has several taste buds between which crypts are formed, i.e. pockets that retain food residues, desquamated cells that begin to ferment, forming a whitish bacterial plaque that appears on the bottom of the tongue, towards the tip, the so-called lingual lining ; this is undoubtedly the main cause of bad breath.
Gingivitis: inflammation of the gums caused by bacterial plaque.
Bacterial plaque: it is the set of bacteria that colonize the oral cavity. Bacterial plaque settles mainly in hard-to-clean areas, such as the area between the gums and teeth or the surface of the back teeth, causing tooth decay and tartar build-up.
Tartar: is the hardening of bacterial plaque on the surface of the teeth.
To avoid these evils, adopt the following habits:
Brush your teeth properly and at least three times a day, without flossing. Don’t forget to clean your tongue, using a scraper, to remove the tongue coating. Make proper use of fluoride with fluoride toothpastes.
Avoid sugar and excessive consumption of sweets, as well as cigarettes, alcohol, and ultra-processed foods. Visit the dentist at least every six months.
