As for the size of the influence, several pop artists have come close to Janet Jackson’s legacy. And while her story is certainly well known in many ways, her way of life has given rise to much speculation and heresy. for that THR features: Provided by Vision Media, Benjamin Hirsch and Rick Murray, director and executive producer of Lifetime’s new four-part documentary series. Janet Jackson, A multi-year process was opened to properly convey Jackson’s story.
The two British filmmakers are not an obvious choice to approach Jackson’s life story. “I mean, are we like your usual Janet fans?” Two white guys from the UK? asked Murray. “Janet was a megastar, an icon in our country as well as in the United States. I’ve followed her career closely and heard about her music in the 80’s, 90’s and beyond, but I didn’t think I would one day be sitting in the same room where he was making a documentary. Her. “
Hirsch and Murray contacted Jackson through a mutual friend as he was looking for filmmakers to shoot behind-the-scenes footage for him. the state of the world Tour in 2017. “We highly recommend him as someone who could do the job,” Murray said. “And I made the decision to send them to our best videographer/director, which, as you know, is kind of a shoot. We were really looking for a person who would come as a person and do everything. Coming soon [Hirsch] He went on tour backstage to film a documentary. And from there, something much bigger and more interesting blossomed. ”
Spending time on set behind the scenes proved to be very inspiring and enlightening for Hirsch. “He didn’t really tell his life story. He never really opened. “So I was wondering if we could do that,” Hirsch recalled. “Of course, it took me a couple of weeks to gain his trust and think and talk about things in his life that weren’t tour-related. But once we got that trust and once I got him to sit down for a three hour interview, he said he could spend half an hour with me and it turned into three hours when we were talking on camera. After he opened up to me, I said, “There’s really something bigger that can be done if he wants to open up, that’s the place in life where he wants to talk about his past and his future. So we have to try to tell them his life story.”
Naturally, making a documentary about Jackson’s life requires some very sensitive issues, such as the allegations of violence against his brother, Michael, or his general wardrobe failure at the Super Bowl halftime show. “It was a measure of what Janet was doing,” explained Hirsch. And so, for me, I have the confidence to ask more sensitive questions. But I think she always told Janet if she didn’t want to talk about anything.”
“I think the final product, the final movie, is all-inclusive,” Murray said. “There is no topic that people knew about Jackson or Janet that he was telling through his lens that we didn’t cover, and all of his answers are in his own words.”
Jackson himself was the executive producer of the film and was involved from the beginning of the documentary process. “She was involved in the whole process, from the wound to the final delivery,” Hirsch revealed. “He worked with us to make changes, insert things, remove things, things like that.”
The film features numerous archival footage from Jackson’s career, many of which he has never seen in his personal life. “Usually you probably look at everything you have on file and then do interviews,” Murray said. “But just because the project was organized organically, we did the opposite. So, before we look at the old images, we have already entered [COVID] Block at this time. And we already have all the interviews, we really can’t do more. It just wasn’t feasible at the time. ”
Celebrating Jackson’s career and legacy is finally at the forefront of the show’s perspective. “One of my favorite parts of the movie is the moment when Janet finally gets the recognition she deserves when it comes out. To control“, – said Hirsch. “Why is he happy. Prior to that, he was in the shadow of the family and had no success with the first two albums he released. So he teams up with Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis, he teams up with Paula Abdul, and suddenly this icon is born. I just enjoyed that moment in the movie. ”
