Based on The Precious Life of Scott Pilgrim (2004), iconic comics by Bryan Lee O’Malley, Netflix anime renews the franchise
Canadian rock and roll, special powers, intense fights, unique characters and even radical veganism are some of the foundations of the comic The Precious Little Life of Scott Pilgrim (2004), by Canadian cartoonist Bryan Lee O’Malley. All this (and a little more) that won fans on the pages with black and white drawings is repeated in Scott Pilgrim: The Seriesanime directed by Abel Gongora and launched this Friday, 17th, in the catalog of Netflix.
Before the animation, the franchise had a first adaptation: on November 5, 2010, in Brazilian cinemas, it arrived Scott Pilgrim vs. the Worlddirected by the genius Edgar Wrightwith a memorable cast, made up of Michael Cera (Scott Pilgrim), Mary Elizabeth Winstead (Ramona Victoria Flowers), Aubrey Plaza (Julie Powers), Kieran Culkin (Wallace Wells), Brie Larson (Envy Adams), Chris Evans (Lucas Lee), Brandon Routh (Todd Ingram), between others.
Despite being quite faithful to the original material and one of the best films of his career, Wrightresponsible for In Rhythm of Escape (2017) and Everybody almost dead (2004), with great acting, direction, costumes and photography, the film was a failure at the time of its release: with a budget of US$60 million, it only raised US$47 million. However, production reached cult status after arriving on DVD and Blu-ray. Second The Numbers, Scott Pilgrim It earned around US$28.6 million in physical media sales, just over half of the box office revenue.
As audiences and fans have already witnessed a faithful adaptation, Scott Pilgrim: The Series comes to completely change the franchise with a totally creative, original and even disruptive story, which surprises from beginning to end.
What is the story of Scott Pilgrim: The Series
It’s quite complicated to talk about the narrative of Scott Pilgrim: The Series without giving spoilers to the plot, which starts like the comic book and the film. The protagonist is a young man in his early 20s, who lives in Toronto, Canada, and dates a high school girl, Knives Chau (Ellen Wong), 17 years old. Lost in life, he is unemployed and only cares about playing video games in the house he shares with Wallace (or rather, house Wallace in which Scott mora de favor) and make sound with his band, Sex Bob-Omb.
However, everything changes when Scott come across Ramona, stylish girl with colorful hair who moved from the United States to Canada. He manages to get her attention and the two begin a relationship. So, he receives a big challenge (which, at first, he didn’t care much about): defeating her seven ex-boyfriends to be able to date her. The synopsis maintains the mystery and stays with this premise:
Scott Pilgrim find the girl of your dreams, Ramona Flowers, but discovers that he needs to defeat the girl’s seven former love affairs to win her over. And then everything gets even more complicated.

In the first fight against an ex-boyfriend, the Matthew Patel (Satya Bhabha), something quite unexpected happens – and it is up to the viewer, in the next episodes, to unravel this entire unprecedented situation that was created in the anime. However, the original title of the production (Scott Pilgrim Takes Off) can give you a tip: “takes off” can mean “take off,” “leave,” “depart,” “go away,” etc.
Scott Pilgrim: The Series it’s good?
If you are, like me, a fan of Scott Pilgrimboth from the comic books and the 2010 film, don’t worry! Scott Pilgrim: The Series is great. Even though it differs greatly from the original material, the new animation reinvigorates the franchise.
It’s a bit sad, initially, to realize that the original story will not be told throughout the eight episodes of the first season. But it’s even cooler that we see another perspective on these iconic characters… the essence of Scott Pilgrim it overflows in the anime! Of course, as it is an adaptation, there is a certain freedom to manipulate the source material, so as not to saturate this incredible story created by Bryan Lee O’Malleyone of the animation’s producers and screenwriters.
Another very cool factor in the production of Netflix it is the return of the entire cast of the film, which helps to bring this remarkable part of the live-action. In fact, it’s like catching up with that friend you haven’t seen in a long time.

The passion for the franchise really becomes evident, whether with the return of the actors and actresses, or with the animation style. Just like the HQ, Scott Pilgrim: The Series lives and breathes anime, whether through the physical traits of the characters, elaborate and complex fight scenes or through humor.
Speaking of style, the animation is very detailed and well-crafted. In the comics, O’Malley He often opted for wider shots with simpler lines. The anime brings the camera closer to the characters, with vibrant colors and vivid expressions.
If you are going to compare it with any other franchise, Scott Pilgrim: The Series would be what What If…? and for the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). With Scott absent in some parts, the new adaptation takes the opportunity to bring to the spotlight characters that appeared little previously. One of the highlights is Knives, Lucas Lee It is Wallace. Not counting Scott It is Ramonathese three are quite close to the viewer – in the case of Lucasthere is even a kind of redemption, since before he was portrayed as a brucutu without many emotions.
The anime of Scott Pilgrim It’s a treat for fans. With a new look at the franchise, the series reveals how this story and characters can go even further than they did. This is an unmissable catalog addition in Netflix.
