Friends One of the founders, Martha Kaufmann, pledged $4 million to become Miss Alma Mater, professor of African and African-American studies at Brandeis University.
He said the present comes after a period of self-reflection and a series of interviews in which he lamented his lack of diversity on the hit NBC sitcom. Kaufmann is said to have been deeply influenced by George Floyd, and his murder sparked protests across the country that fueled conversations about systemic racism and called for involvement across multiple sectors.
“It took me a long time to understand how I perpetrated systemic racism,” Kaufmann said in a statement released by Brandeis. “I worked hard to become an ally, an anti-racist. And it felt like I could participate in the conversation from a white woman’s point of view.”
Known as the Marta F. Kauffman ’78 Professor of African and Afro-American Studies, the Foundation will support leading scholars to focus on the study of African and African diaspora peoples and cultures, as well as assist the AAAS Department in the recruitment of experts. , Set long-term priorities and provide new opportunities for students.
Brandeis president Ron Libowitz called the gift a “transformative moment” in the university’s history. “This chair is very important to both our Department of African American Studies and the University,” he said at the department, which celebrated its 50th anniversary in 2019. “This is the program’s first award-winning chair, which means it provides the study of African and African-American culture, history, and politics for generations of Brandeis students, more critical than ever.”
Kaufman graduated from Brandeis University, a private research university located in Waltham, west of Boston, Massachusetts, in 1978. It was there that he met a writing partner and Friends Co-founder David Crane when they were both students. In 2020 he received an honorary doctorate from the University and in May 2020/2021 he applied for the joint start of classes.
