House of the Dragon: Before Game of Thrones
Game of Thrones was one of the most watched series in television history. HBO’s true goose that laid the golden eggs, the American channel rushed to continue the saga imagined by George RR Martin with a first spin-off released in August 2022. Called House of the Dragonfocuses on the fall of the Targaryen Empire, several centuries before Daenerys’ birth.
Season 1 introduced us to King Viserys I, who decided, against all odds, to name his daughter Rhaenyra as his successor to the Iron Throne. But the conflicting relationships within her family, particularly after her marriage to Alicent Hightower, gave rise to the roots of the future war of succession within the clan, more commonly known as “The Dance of the Dragons”.
Season 1 set the stage for this bloody clash that would occur between Rhaenyra’s clan and Alicent’s. The second season will immerse us completely in this war that will lead to the fall of the Targaryen dynasty and the death of its dragons.
A first trailer that sets the tone
It was during CCXP, the Comic Con that took place in Sao Paulo, Brazil, that HBO Max revealed the very first images of the second season of House of the Dragon.
It is no coincidence that we witness the first bloody clashes between the green clan (Alicent) and the black clan (Rhaenyra).
As a reminder, the first season of House of the Dragon ended with a shot of Rhaenyra Targaryen’s angry gaze as she learns that her son had been slain by the dragon of Aemond Targaryen, his half-brother, of the Alicent clan. We understood then that she would decide to take revenge at all costs, with the help of her husband Daemon Targaryen, in the worst possible way.
As for the Iron Throne, it was Aegon II Targaryen who took it over after Viserys’ death (and a big misunderstanding). Rhaenyra, the legitimate heir designated by King Viserys, therefore has every reason to claim it.
House of the Dragon season 2 will air in summer 2024. We can’t wait to see the dragons again!
