Zack Snyder and superheroes: a long story
Zack Snyder’s trajectory in the DC superhero universe is rich and complex, marked by works that have divided critics and inflamed the passions of fans. It was in 2009 that the director entered the world of comic book adaptations with Guardians. While this film is not part of the current DC Universe, it established Zack Snyder as a director capable of bringing superhero stories to life in a way visually stunning and narratively bold.
Then, in 2013, the Snyder era in the DC Cinematic Universe officially began Man of Steel. This film laid the foundation for a new vision of Superman, bringing a darker and more complex perspective to the iconic character. Man of Steel was a success, paving the way for a series of films that would form the foundation of the DC Universe.
In 2016, Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice expanded this universe, introducing Ben Affleck as Batman and Gal Gadot as Wonder Woman. This film was crucial in setting the tone and direction of Snyder’s DC universe, although it divided public opinion. His dark and serious approach has been acclaimed for its depth or criticized for its lack of levity.
Next year, Justice League was supposed to be the culmination of Snyder’s vision, but personal circumstances forced him to withdraw from the project. The final version, completed by Joss Whedon, deviated significantly from Snyder’s original vision.
It wasn’t until 2021 that fans had the opportunity to see the Snyder Cut From Justice League, a restored and expanded version acclaimed for its faithfulness to the director’s original vision. This film not only rehabilitated Snyder’s approach, but also reignited discussions about the future of the DC Universe under his leadership.
Zack Snyder definitely answers
But the commercial failure of Justice League and the new turning point of DC, which now wants to start from scratch with superheroes (and the arrival of James Gunn), has led Zack Snyder to move away. Since 2021 he has found a new home in which he thrives: Netflix. The streaming giant has in fact left him complete freedom so that he can create personal projects, very far from the superheroes of the DCEU. So the zombie movie The army of the dead was released in 2021, and in a few days we will discover the first part of his Dante space opera, Rebel moon.
With Zack Snyder firmly entrenched at Netflix, many fans have expressed a desire to see the streaming giant acquire the rights so the director can pursue his vision with DC superheroes. Unfortunately it will remain a fantasy.. The director, in fact, responded to a post on the Vero social network, to confirm that the Snyder Verse was definitively over:
Zack Snyder’s latest DCEU film will therefore remain his Director’s Cut version Justice League.
