The World After Us makes Netflix subscribers’ heads spin
In less than a week, the new Netflix thriller The World After Us directed by Sam Esmail has stormed into the top 10 of the most viewed content on the platform. In France, as in many countries around the worldthe film adapted from the novel of the same name by Rumaan Alam rose straight to the top of the most watched feature films.
Worn by Julia Roberts, Ethan Hawke and Mahershala Ali, The world after us presents a family of New Yorkers, who is preparing to spend a few days of vacation in a splendid villa, which they found a few kilometers from New York. But things quickly take an unexpected turn when two strangers arrive in the middle of the night, claiming to be the owners of the town they have rented.
They explain to them that the country is threatened by a cyber attack and that they must take refuge. Without contact with the outside world, the two families must therefore coexist, while the world as they know it is on the brink of collapse.
A mysterious ending
The film is full of mysteries and hidden details (like that of the deer) and the ending of the film did not fail to destabilize viewers. The last scene, in fact, does not give a definitive answer to what is happening outside (even if we see a warning message, which indicates that the country is prey to rebel armed forces and radiation), nor to what happens to the characters, except for Rose, who takes refuge in the bunker, watching the latest episode of Friends. A divisive prejudice, while today everything tends towards over-explanation. In this regard, Sam Esmail told us:
Yes, it was a bold choice and we knew it would be polarizing. I think life is full of ambiguity. I made this film to reflect those moments of crisis when we don’t get answers, when we have to be satisfied with what we know, I wanted to stay true to this until the end. Personally, as a spectator, I find films that resolve everything in a simplistic way less interesting. They pop out of my head as soon as I leave the cinema. What I love are films that provoke conversations, that let my mind swim and inspire me to discuss with others. It’s more emotional for me, and that was the intention behind our film.
For his part, the author Rumaan Alam said so Variety that the book also didn’t give a “definitive answer” as to what happened to the characters. However, there is a difference with the ending of the film. In the novel, Rose doesn’t stay in the bunker, she leaves with food for her family.
What happens to the characters at the end of the film?
The big question that viewers ask themselves at the end The world after us is: what happens to the other characters? According to the author, they all manage to return to the bunker of the nearby villa, under the leadership of GH (Mahershala Ali):
The last thing GH says is that they have to take refuge in the bunker. In my mind, GH is so capable and competent that I have a feeling he’s already found the solution. However, Archie’s fate remains uncertain to me. I don’t actually have an answer. It’s an uncertainty that I often hear in Sam’s comments, he too has doubts. This opening leaves the situation ambiguous enough for the audience to interpret. If I don’t give a definitive answer it’s simply because I don’t have one.
In the bunker we discover that there are enough resources to survive for several months, even several years. We can therefore imagine that the two families unite and survive external events.
