“You Can’t Lie to Your Body”: Eva Green’s role that had the biggest impact on her

Eva Green: already 20 years of career

Twenty years ago, almost today, Eva Green played her first film role Innocents – The dreamers, by Bernardo Bertolucci alongside Louis Garrel and Michael Pitt. After another film in French (Arsenius Lupine by Jean-Paul Salomé), the French actress flies across the Atlantic film under the direction of Ridley Scott in his great historical fresco, Kingdom of Paradise released in 2005.

But it is the following year that Eva Green becomes a real international star, playing the role of Vesper Lynd, the great love of James Bond (played for the first time by Daniel Craig), in Casino Royale, directed by Martin Campbell. Since then we have seen her in various projects, both blockbusters and independent filmsalways juggling between francophone and international productions.

In 2023 she became Milady de Winter in both films The Three Musketeers, directed by Martin Bourboulon. The second part, just released in theaters, puts her character in the foreground, revealing in particular her flaws behind her femme fatale shell.

Vanessa Ives, the role of a lifetime

As part of the promotion of The Three Musketeers: Miladywe met Eva Green, to discuss this very dense role with her, which goes far beyond the simple figure of the femme fatale. We also spoke with her about the role that most influenced her career. And it is not surprising that it is that of Vanessa Ives, from the series Terrible Pennywhich he held for three years (between 2014 and 2016), released.

The character of Vanessa Ives in Penny Dreadful, who I lived with for three years, quote, stuck with me. But it was quite a tormenting thing, I wouldn’t have wanted it to go on for years because you can’t lie to your body, so it can get a bit dark. But I loved this experience on many levels. First of all, she is a golden character, written extremely well by John Logan, who I revere. And then even meeting all these actors, there is a family that is created after all these months of filming… It’s complicated in a good way, if it were too easy it would be boring

Eva Green told us.

An unforgettable show

Vanessa Ives is one of the most beautiful series characters created in recent years. This heroine, lost in the twists and turns of her inner demons as she desperately searches for a ray of saving light, has left an indelible mark in the hearts of viewers. In the dark and mysterious setting of Victorian London, she embodied a moving struggle between light and shadow.

Eva Green put enormous effort into this sometimes very tortured role, both mentally and physically, and could not have played it any longer. From the second episode of Terrible Penny, Sessiondirected by JA Bayona, Vanessa enters a trance, possessed by the devil, and rises into the air, during a spiritualism session. An impressive physical performance from Eva Greenwhich continued in the other two seasons of the series, which dragged Vanessa further and further into the abyss of darkness, leaving her a small respite.
