Italian authorities yesterday arrested the screenwriter and director Paul Haggis in Ostuni (Brindisi) in cases of sexual violence and aggravated personal injury. Canadian director, winner of an Academy Award in 2006 for screenplay of the film “Fallen“, He is in the town of Apulian to participate in the film festival”Tapos Fest“.
As reported by the Prosecutor of Brindisi, the director allegedly forced a foreign girl to have sex for two days. Investigators also reported that the woman was then accompanied by the director at the Papola Casale airport in Brindisi in the first light of dawn and left there, despite her precarious psycho-physical condition. At the airport, the woman was assisted and treated by police and border staff, before being taken to hospital in Brindisi. Following this, the woman formalizes the complaint against Paul Haggis. Concurrent with the arrest, an evidentiary incident was also requested. From what emerged in initial investigations, the director has long known the woman who, after one of the stages of sexual violence, was forced to treat.
This is not the first allegation of sexual assault against Paul Haggis. In 2017, the Canadian director was accused of sexual assault by his press officer Haleigh Breest, who said she was raped by Haggis after the premiere in 2013. Haggis denied the allegations, and said the relationship was settled and the woman was sued for defamation, but the motion was rejected by the judge. But it won’t stop there, in 2018 four more women accused the director of sexual harassment and assault.
Haggis spent more than 20 years in television before moving to feature films. He became the first screenwriter to collect two consecutive Best Picture Oscars for his screenplays for Million Dollar Baby (2004), directed by Clint Eastwood, e Fallen (2005). He has also worked on two other films in Eastwood, viz Flag of our Fathers At Letters from Iwo Jima, which eventually earned her third Oscar nomination for Best Screenplay. Haggis was also involved in the writing of the James Bond film Casino Royale.
