Star Wars : Disney’s chaotic trilogy
The last trilogy Star Wars proposed by Disney between 2015 and 2019 deserves an in-depth study as its production has demonstrated chaotic. However, everything started well with The strength awakens which, despite being criticized by some who saw it as a remake of episode 4, was overall appreciated. First film Star Wars under the Disney banner, the feature film grossed more than $2 billion in global box office revenue!
Everything seemed to be going well, but what happened next, The Last Jedi, for its part, has deeply divided the public. If some appreciated the novelty proposed by Rian Johnson, the inconsistencies compared to the previous film were highlighted. But above all, some Star Wars fans have made a lot of noise to express their dissatisfaction. Therefore, despite over $1.3 billion in revenue worldwide, episode 8 prompted Disney to reconsider its plans.

JJ Abrams was recalled for The Rise of Skywalker with the aim of correcting the direction taken by Rian Johnson. Abhorrent for a studio of this kind used to having long-term projects (at least with Marvel). The result is strange to say the least, episode 9 gives the impression having been tinkered with to fit two films into one. Which didn’t stop the blockbuster from slightly exceeding one billion in worldwide takings, which remains far from episode 7.
No redemption for Kylo Ren originally
It is not only from an external point of view that the production of this trilogy developed Star Wars it looked shaky. The members of these films were able to realize this, starting with Adam Driver. During transmission The Rich Eisen Show, the interpreter of Kylo Ren made many revelations about what these three hits were originally supposed to offer. And the discovery is even more surprising. Precisely based on the development of his character, the antagonist was not expected to redeem himself from his sins. On the contrary, he had to do it become even more evil.
I had an overall story arc that (JJ Abrams) wanted to do. His idea was that (Kylo Ren’s) journey would be the opposite of Vader’s. He starts out being the most trusting and most loyal to the dark side. Then, in the last film, he becomes the most vulnerable and the weakest. (Abrams) wanted to start with the opposite. (Kylo Ren) was the most confused and vulnerable, and by the end of all three films, he would be the most committed to the dark side. I tried to keep that story arc in mind, even if it wasn’t the intended path, because it changed during filming. But I remained focused on this point.
Episode 9 changed everything
An interesting approach from JJ Abrams, who therefore had a vision for the entire trilogy. But Adam Driver goes on to explain that, starting from the second film, Ryan Johnsonchanged direction“, while following a certain coherence for the character (in fact he remains evil). But the real upheaval came episode 9 and a purpose that no longer corresponded in any way to what Adam Driver signed up for.
The last film changed to become this story about the dyad. And (Kylo Ren) transformed into Ben Solo. This was never part of the plan. The character was Ben Solo from the beginning, but there was never a version where we would see him as Ben Solo when I signed on.
Recall that Kylo Ren is the name taken by Ben Solo, son of Leia and Han Solo, when he turns to the dark side. And at the end of the trilogy, he becomes Ben Solo again by returning to the light side to fight Palpatine. However, this is not the only element that has changed over time. Small changes were made to minor characters (such as Hux’s death), but also to the overall plot of Star Wars Episode 9 which was rewritten numerous times.
We hope that in the future Disney will be able to propose something better constructed, starting with the next film announced with the return of Daisy Ridley as Rey.
