New Year presents more interesting stories and explores new characters in episodes that are difficult not to binge; read the review
Despite being one of the most beloved recent productions by fans of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, What If…?It didn’t manage to win me over with its first season. Reinventing already known stories within the franchise, such as What if… Captain Carter was the first Avenger? It is What if… Doctor Strange lost his heart instead of his hands?the series opted for a familiar and safe path that, apart from one episode or two, left me with the feeling that the production had only been made to fill the Disney+ catalog.
However, even though it no longer owes much to anyone – besides a boring and often demanding entertainment journalist – the first animation in the Marvel Cinematic Universe returns with new and much more interesting stories, new characters and some surprises, that will make fans thank Disney+ for releasing season two episodes daily, like a nice Christmas gift.
Of course, the new season of What If…? doesn’t stop playing with the possibilities within the franchise’s multiverse, but the series is now much less literal, so to speak, than it was in its first year. For example, we no longer have the same plot told from another perspective, as in What if… T’Challa became Star-Lord?but a trigger for a whole new story, like in the second episode, What if…Peter Quill attacked Earth’s greatest heroes?on what Yondu fulfills the work for which he was hired and delivers Peter Quill to your father, the villain Ego.
Furthermore, the new episodes not only work with faces already well known to fans, but also give the opportunity for smaller characters to shine in the spotlight, such as King T’Chakaold black Panther and father of T’Challa; It is Bill FosterO Goliathwhich appeared briefly in Ant-Man and Wasp (2018).
However, the most interesting thing is the introduction of new characters, such as Kahhoristar of the sixth episode of the new season, What if… Kahhori reshaped the world?. In addition to being one of the best of the season, the chapter brings the exciting possibility of seeing, for the first time, a heroine jump from animation to live-action productions and not the other way around.
I say that fans of the franchise will thank Disney+ for choosing to release the episodes daily and not weekly, as happened in the first season, because, despite it being an anthology and one episode not necessarily having a connection with the next, the desire is to marathon everything at once, as was the case with this journalist.
After so many recent tragedies in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, whether in front of the cameras, with the release of the terrible Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumaniaor behind the scenes, such as the box office failure of The Marvels and the conviction and dismissal of Jonathan Majors of the franchise, the second season of What If…? comes like that light at the end of the tunnel and makes us believe that the best in Marvel still exists and, little by little, it must find itself again.
