A great year for Vincent Cassel
2023 will have been a prosperous year for Vincent Cassel. In fact, he starred in two of the biggest hits at the French box office: Asterix and Obelix: The Middle Kingdom and the diptych The Three Musketeers. In the first he played Caesar, once again taking on the determined Gauls.
And in the second, he played Athos, one of the Musketeers, haunted by a ghost from his past. We also saw it in the series Connectionavailable on Apple TV+, in which he starred once again alongside Eva Green (whom he later reunited The Three Musketeers).
He also starred in David Cronenberg’s new feature film, The Shrouds, expected by the end of the year. This is the third time she has worked under his direction since then Shadow promises AND A dangerous method.
The Shrouds: a sordid tone and a first image
The title of the film, The Shrouds, literally means “the shrouds”. Once again David Cronenberg will talk about death. And the tone of the film, revealed in the new issue of Cahiers du Cinéma it sends shivers down your spine :
In an ultra-modern cemetery, a widower invents a device to maintain a connection with the dead, even during their process of decomposition. The questioning of this invention will be the opportunity for a return to life.
In the cast of this science fiction thriller we will also find Diane Kruger, Guy Pearce and Sandrine Holt alongside Vincent Cassel.
A first image from the film has been revealed in which we discover these famous 2.0 coffins:

Before filming, David Cronenberg had confided that it was his “most personal” film and that there would be “autobiographical parts”. The director was deeply affected by the death of his wife, which occurred in 2017, which led him to move away from film sets (and then return in 2022 with Crimes of the future).
While there hasn’t been an official announcement yet, it’s a safe bet The Shrouds will be presented at the next Cannes Film Festival, which will be held from 17 to 25 May.
