The Snow Circle attracts Netflix subscribers
Available on Netflix from January 4th The snow circle it quickly rose to the top of the most-watched films on the platform. Directed by JA Bayona, the film tells the true story of the survivors of a plane crash on a glacier in the heart of the Andes in 1972, and their struggle to survive in extreme conditions for 72 days. Most of the passengers on the plane to Santiago, Chile were players of the Uruguayan national rugby team, the Old Christians.
Of the flight’s 45 passengers and crew, only sixteen survived the 72 days on the glacier, including resorting to survival cannibalism. It was thanks to the courage of two men, Roberto Canessa and Fernando Parrado (known as Nando Parrado), who crossed the Andes for 10 days, that the other survivors were finally saved. The snow circle it is based on the novel Snow Societywhich was written with the help of survivors.
What happens to the 16 survivors of Flight 571?
As of today, in 2024, fourteen of the sixteen men who survived the tragedy are still alive. Javier Methol died of cancer in 2015, as did José Luis “Coche” Inciarte, who died in 2023. The latter was however able to see an early version of the film before his death, as JA Bayona attests in an interview given to El País.
Roberto Canessa, one of the two heroes who spent 10 days in the Andes seeking help, became a great cardiologist. He signed an autobiography that traces the incident in 2016 entitled Tapeworm Surviving: How a Plane Crash in the Andes Inspired My Calling to Save Lives. He actively participated in the development of the film together with JA Bayona, and was interviewed several times during the promotion:
Nando Parrado, the second survivor to spend 10 days on the glaciers seeking help, is now 74 years old. He works as an entrepreneur and holds conferences, and has written a book-testimony entitled Miracles in the Andes in 2006, where it returns to disaster.
He was recently interviewed by Netflix to talk about the feature film and his experience. He confided it The snow circle it was “the most faithful film” to what was experienced on this glacier:
Eduardo Strauch pursued a career as an architect and even wrote a book about the incident entitled Out of the Silence: After the Crash, released in 2019, as well as Carlos “Carlitos” Páez Rodríguez. After studying in the United States, Pedro Algorta became an economist and also wrote his testimony in a book entitled In the mountainspublished in 2016.
Among the other survivors of the crash we can also mention Gustavo Zerbino and Ramon “Moncho” Sabella, who, like Roberto Canessa, also conduct conferences on self-overcoming and motivation.
