Eight for silver It’s on Netflix
Netflix recently released the horror film online Eight for silver (The damned one in the VO). A film that went unnoticed when it was released in American theaters, then when it was made available on VOD in France. In fact, Sean Ellis’ feature film, starring Boyd Holbrook, Kelly Reilly and Alistair Petrie, was released in theaters in February 2022. It grossed just over $4.5 million in US box office revenue. Then, just one year later, on April 1, 2023, the French public was able to access it legally.
But the platform with the red logo is definitely the best when it comes to giving this type of work a second chance. Shortly after being published online, Eight for silver found himself at the top of the the top 10 of the most watched films of the moment in France, in third position.

The film begins in 1916 during the Battle of the Somme, where a wounded French soldier prepares for surgery. After removing three bullets from his body, the surgeon discovered a fourth made of silver. It doesn’t take long to realize that this is a werewolf. But the story then continues going back 35 years, in 1881. A man named John McBride travels to the French countryside to determine whether the corpse of a young teenager is the work of a man or an animal. Guest of Seamus Laurent, he meets the latter’s wife, Isabelle, and parent of a child who recently passed away after being bitten by another boy who had just put it in his mouth silver fangs…
A werewolf film like no other
Eight for silver he has the originality of his way of approaching the werewolf theme by adding possession. In fact, it is not a beast that causes the transformations, but these cursed fangs buried under a scarecrow. An object that arises from a dark story, following the massacre of a Roma clan. The director talked about it (via Variety) his desire to go elsewhere with the genre.

The director also spoke about the filming in the west of France, in the Charentewhich allowed him to obtain “a landscape that seems eternally foggy and etherealIt was also during filming, while Sean Ellis was filming these characters who have to lock themselves in their homes and hide to face a mysterious threat, that the Covid pandemic took place, drawing a “pretty crazy” parallel between the film and reality.
