Earlier this week in France, Google agreed to a new sheet of licensing deals with publishers across the country, with the Silicon Valley giant paying news outlets and publishers to use its copyrighted content in its Google Search, Google News and Discover. Google also stopped trying to challenge a French competition authority’s decision last July that fined the company $527 million (€500 million) for its abusive business practice in a bid to protect copyrights with French publishers.

Google News was shut down in Spain in 2014 after the government required all online aggregators to pay publishers for news clippings. Last year, Spain introduced new legislation that allows media outlets to deal directly with the tech giant, rules that bring the country more in line with other EU regulations.

Europe is not the only place where governments are forcing tech giants to change their approach to news. Australia passed a law earlier this year requiring Google and Facebook to pay publishers for featured content, and Canada has introduced similar legislation.
