The Snow Circle: this true story that fascinates Netflix subscribers

On October 13, 1972, Uruguayan Air Force Flight 571, carrying the team and relatives of a local rugby team, crashed into a glacier in the heart of the Andes while trying to reach Santiago, Chile. At the time of the crash they lost lives 12 people (including the pilot). The remaining 33 survivors, blocked by the cold and snowthey have no choice but to retreat to what remains of the plane.

After exhausting their meager food reserves, the passengers, in order to survive, decide to resort to survival cannibalism, and begin consuming human flesh from other deceased passengers, which were preserved from the cold. Thus they manage to survive for many weeks, despite the hostility of the place.

Roberto Canessa declared in this regard:

Our common goal was to survive, but what we lacked was food. We had long since exhausted the meager supplies we had found on the plane and there was no vegetation or animal life to be found.

After just a few days, we felt like our bodies were burning themselves to stay alive. In a short time we would become too weak to recover from starvation.

We knew the answer, but it was too terrible to contemplate. The bodies of our friends and teammates, preserved outside in the snow and ice, contained vital proteins, essential for our survival. But could we do it?

For a long time we suffered. I went out into the snow and prayed to God for guidance. Without his consent, I felt that I would violate the memories of my friends, that I would steal their souls.

We wondered if we were going crazy even considering something like this. Had we become brutal savages? Or was it the only sensible thing to do? Truly, we were pushing the limits of our fear.

Only two months had passed since the crash, and when there were only 16 survivors left, that two brave men, Fernando Parrado and Roberto Canessa, decided to leave in search of help. After ten days of walking in the Andes, they end up finding help. On December 22, two helicopters, led by Fernando Parrado, finally reached the crash site and rescued the survivors, who were suffering from malnutrition.

It is this incredible story of survival that JA Bayona portrayed in the film The snow circlecurrently available on Netflix, and which has not left the top spot among the most watched films on the platform.
