Considered one of the strongest works of the 20th century, Holocaust it was prepared for eleven years by Claude Lanzmann. Released in 1985, this documentary addresses the Holocaust, but without showing the archive imagesthe director opted for testimonies, from the survivors, but also from the sponsors.
Lanzmann wanted to avoid any dramatization and instead sought to convey the horror of the Holocaust through the words of those who lived through it. This decision led to immersive and disturbing cinematic experiencewhere the stories of the interviewees become the driving force of the film.
A documentary divided into four parts
Of record duration, Holocaust is divided into four parts, dealing with the gas truck extermination campaign in Chełmno, the Treblinka and Auschwitz-Birkenau extermination camps, and the process of eliminating the Warsaw Ghetto.
Witnesses such as Simon Srebnik, Mordechai Podchlebnik, Franz Schalling and Walter Stier are highlighted, describing in detail the functioning of the camps and the extermination processes. Touching testimonies include that of Abraham Bomba, a hairdresser at the Treblinka camp, and Franz Suchomel, an SS Unterscharführer who worked in the camp.
The film also includes interviews with Raul Hilberg, a well-known historian, as well as stories of Jan Karski, who worked for the Polish government in exile, and Franz Grassler, deputy to the Nazi commissioner of the Warsaw Ghetto.
Holocaust it received an honorary César in 1986 and was placed on UNESCO’s Memory of the World register in May 2023. It is still considered one of the best documentaries ever made. Its arrival on a public service channel is excellent news for the duty of remembrance.
