The snow circle they tell in an almost documentary style their daily struggle for survival in the high mountains, when the emergency services declared them missing. At the end of the 72 days spent on the glacier, only 16 men were found alive. They owe this miracle to two of them, who left in search of help, crossing the Andes on foot for 10 days.
The film did not leave the top spot in the top 10 of the most watched feature films on Netflix and since then subscribers have become passionate about the true story. And a question often emerges among them.
JA Bayona answers the question everyone is asking
If you saw The snow circleIt will not have escaped your attention that the survivors seem to have an inexhaustible supply of cigarettes. The director wanted to give an answer to this detail on the social networkdirectly quoting the book by Pablo Vierci, on which the film is based: “the tail of the plane was full of cigarette packs“. To explain this phenomenon, JA Bayona detailed:
In the early 1970s there was a cigarette shortage in Chile and Javier Methol (survived) and Francisco “Pancho” Abal (deceased) were shareholders in Abal Hnos, a tobacco company. For this reason they brought many boxes of cigarette cartons, with the intention of sharing them with everyone. Furthermore, cigarettes, like food, were rationed during the 72 days spent in the mountains.
the director confided, before returning to a question that must have crossed her mind: since they had the means to light cigarettes, why didn’t they try to light a fire to keep warm?
JA Bayona wanted to answer this question in a very simple way:
Why didn’t they try to light a fire to keep warm? Because the few things they had to burn were too wet.
