AmbulanceMichael Bay’s explosive chase
Released in March 2022 in cinemas, Ambulance by Michael Bay arrived just over a year later on Netflix in France. Latest entry in Michael Bay’s filmography, Ambulance it is a pure film from the director of Bad guys and the saga transformerswith some peculiarities.
First of all, it has a relatively small budget for the spectacle it offers 40 million dollars. Then it’s a remake – a first for Michael Bay – from the Danish film of the same name released in 2005 (currently available on Netflix). Finally away from the madness Six underground as the ultra-realistic intention of 13 hourshe would rather find an interesting balance between his great film Rock and it is underrated No pain no gain.

Both simple in proposal and rich in ways, Ambulance quickly gears up to deliver non-stop action to a trio of actors. And with the staging of this action, Michael Bay proves it, almost 30 years later Bad guys, is still a master of the genre. The show is particularly delightful and is urgently worth (re)watching ever since the film will leave Netflix on January 22, 2024.
Wild action for Jake Gyllenhaal
In Ambulance, it all begins with Will (Yahya Abdul-Mateen II), an army veteran who needs money to treat his wife’s cancer. With his back against the wall, he turns to his adoptive brother, Danny (Jake Gyllenhaal). This is a robber, and while Will has come to ask him for the most conventional job possible, he finally finds himself at his side to immediately participate in an ambitious robbery. This robbery will take a dramatic turn and the two brothers will find themselves behind the wheel of an ambulance, with a wounded policeman and a doctor (Eiza González) taken hostage in the back seat, and all the Los Angeles cops on their trail…

Ambulance it leaves no respite, and it is with bated breath and alongside Danny and Will that the viewer then experiences a crazy chase. Shootings, accidents, explosions, it’s impossible to detach certain shots from your retinaAmbulancelike the one where Danny, hanging on the side of the ambulance, shoot two helicopters in the dry channel of the Los Angeles River… This sequence, almost improvised by Michael Bay, is exemplary of the director’s style, a genius when it comes to bringing his wildest ideas to life. Jake Gyllenhaal, who shot the scene without a stunt doublehe told how he had been called back together with his “brother” at the last moment:
We were on our way home, Yahya was driving the ambulance. We were almost done for the day, ready to take off our characters’ clothes and put our own back on. Michael called us on the radio: “Wait, come back, they just opened the LA River.” He said, “I have an idea! I have two helicopters!”
Lightness, references and fun
There where Ambulance he succeeds in his bet, it is by proposing himself pure entertainment where the dramatic stakes don’t suffocate the lightness that Michael Bay wanted to put into it. Thus, from the beginning of the film, we hear the secondary characters making references to the films Bad guys AND Rock by Michael Bay. A way to play down your film, and also to propose it a cinematic experience unprecedented, where unprecedented drone footage and destructive car stunts take precedence over the “seriousness” of the story.
Even if Danny is a dangerous criminal ready to kill anyone who stands in his way, although Will quickly relents on his offer to participate in the robbery, and in the end the two men appear much less friendly than Camille, the emergency room doctor they hold hostage, we grow fond of these two antiheroesconstantly perceiving in their initiatives the carefree children of the past. Ambulance it is in their image, and that of Michael Bay, that he chose to do so for his fifteenth feature film have fun at all costs and blow it all up in an adventure as joyful as it is spectacular.
