Reviews of Beavis and Butt-Head Do The Universe are live, see what critics say about Paramount + movie

The best duo of the 90s of MTV is back with Beavis and Butt-Head create the universe, a new film over a quarter of a century since they “made” America. This is good news for those who grew up laughing at the raw humor of Beavis and Butt-Head. despite a rapid recovery in 2011 audiences today may not be familiar with the sophomore duo unless they’ve seen a few episodes on MTV Classic – but Mike Judge is willing to deposit a features Beavis and Butt-Head to a new generation Paramount + subscribers ).

His trailers dub Beavis and Butt-Head create the universe as “the dumbest sci-fi movie ever made,” and while it seems self-deprecating or at least self-aware, in the case of this titular couple (eh-eh), embarrassment has never been a bad thing. But let the critics be the judge. The critics are in, so let’s take a look at what they say about the film, starting Gossipify’s review of Beavis and Butt-Head create the universe . Our Eric Eisenberg gives the film 4 out of 5 stars, saying it’s very, very silly, but the double meanings and immature humor are still fun for the intended audience:

Anyone who has never cared about Beavis and Butt-Head will still not find joy in Beavis and Butt-Head Do The Universe, and I have no idea if it will speak to the younger generation, but it can be said with absolute certainty that the film is a delight for Gen X and Gen Y fans, and should be appreciated for how utterly silly he is.

Danielle Ryan from Slash Film He gives the film an 8 out of 10, also saying it’s unclear whether Beavis and Butt-Head can get new fans, but those who have always liked Cornholio and mocked the double meaning will be happy. This reviewer says the plot picks up some of the same ground as the previous film, but it’s still as beautiful as it is silly.

It’s been 26 years, but Judge didn’t miss a beat. The film mocks the ridicule of our modern world without making explicit political statements or strong pop culture references, making it a refreshing little escape from our real-world stupidity. The guys even discover they’ve spawned a multiverse, complete with “Smart Beavis” and “Smart Butt-Head”, but the joke is unwelcome and Judge isn’t using it as an excuse to make a lot of multiverse jokes in the media.

Daniel Fieberg from THR says Beavis and Butt-Head still seem funny and pathetic (in a good way), but wonders how much we want to explore how the couple would behave in the modern world. Either way, Mike Judge and the others were right to use their travels to make a real movie and not a bloated TV episode:

Like Beavis and Butt-Head Do America in 1996, Beavis and Butt-Head Do the Universe seem made for a movie, rather than a stuffed 22-minute TV episode. The storyline, in which Beavis and Butt-Head’s desire to kiss takes them on a journey through space, time and Texas, is filled with narrative complications and sufficiently justifiable detours, including a college and prison. While there isn’t a giant leap in animation quality, there are some real scenes, like a long climax car chase, and no shortage of wonderfully silly musical montages.

Owen Gleiberman of Variety says this is the follow up that no one has asked for, but Beavis and Butt-Head create the universe is always sarcastic and kind enough to get away with it:

Good cartoon characters tend to be ageless, and Beavis and Butt-Head Do the Universe are smart enough not to seem like an anachronism. The duo’s creator and always mischievous guide, Mike Judge, brings the characters to the present day without any style or timing issues. Without saying it completely, this makes him the butt of a playful fantasy for the era of superheroes. However, in the past, it sometimes felt like Beavis and Butt-Head were the future, as it may seem when youth culture is completely cut off from reality. At the time, there was a comic danger in how far they could go with it all. From now on, they are just one exhibit among many in our mad rush to the abyss.

Kate Erbland of IndieWire rate the film with a B-, saying this Top Gun: Maverick is the big winner of the summer to please a nostalgic fan base, but Beavis and Butt-Head create the universe it could be a lock for second place.

Beavis and Butt-Head Do the Universe doesn’t take full advantage of a plethora of potential twists, parodies and twists, but it does make the dynamically foolish duo come back for even more foolish madness (hehehehe, ‘wack’). Some things never go out of style, and that includes silly best friends with a panache for having found themselves at the crossroads of pivotal events in human history. We both missed you, come back soon.

It looks like Mike Judge is bringing nostalgia in all the right ways, even if (especially if?) It’s still all very silly. If you want to see the infamous duo try to juggle 21st century life, you can do it the same way we did in the 90s: on the home screens. Beavis and Butt-Head create the universe will be available to stream exclusively on Paramount + on Thursday, June 23.
