Tonight on TV: this series with “impressive” realism that dethroned The Last of Us

Black heartsa successful French series

French production Black heartsa war miniseries first broadcast on Prime Video in February 2023, it was a great success. It also had the luxury of dethroning the series phenomenon The last of us during its launch. Then acquired by the BBC, then broadcast January 22, 2024 on France 2, she quickly established herself as one of the best French action series. The fact is that, in front of and behind the camera, there is a lot of talent.

Indeed, to direct in particular Nicolas Duvauchelle, Nina Meurisse or even Marie Dompnier and Tewfik Jallab, members of a A commando of the French special forces faces Daesh in Iraq, shortly after the attacks of November 13, 2015, director Ziad Doueiri officiated. We owe him in particular the film in 2017 The insultas well as the results of the series Skid and several episodes of Black Baron. On creating and writing Black heartswe also find Duong Dang-Thai and Corinne Garfin, who both collaborated on writing several episodes of the series The Office of Legends.

Professional support

The success of the series is the result of careful writing, inspired performances by the cast, a head-on approach to the subject and, in large part, its great realism. In fact, the production of Black hearts I hoped that the representation of the activities of this special forces group was as faithful as possible to reality.

To achieve this, participants in the series underwent training with 13th Parachute Dragoon Regiment, regiment belonging to the French special forces. A former member of these special forces, Rédouane Louaazizi, was also hired to officiate Technical advisor during the writing and filming of the series. This is what he said :

I was part of the Special Forces for sixteen years, in the 3rd squadron of the 13th RDP. The producer of the series came to our unit at the beginning of writing this article to learn more about the special forces. We had a good feeling and since he knew I was retiring soon, he contacted me again to help them with the script. (…) The actors came for a short week for an immersion course. Naturally they learned to use weapons but above all they came to absorb their state of mind.

Furthermore, to give maximum realism to the images of his series, director Ziad Doueiri was inspired, among others, by engaging films AS Mosul- both the documentary by Olivier Sarbil and the fictional film by Matthew Michael Carnahan -, Minesweeper AND Zero Dark Thirty by Kathryn Bigelow.

“Impressive” realism.

To judge the level of realism of Black heartsformer soldier Alexandre Alex, member of the 1st RPIMa special forces for 11 years, watched the series and provided his analysis. Regarding the equipment of the soldiers on screen, he stated the following:

Overall, I was pretty impressed. The equipment, weapons and attitudes are consistent, especially compared to what has been done in previous films. We believe they were warned.

Another aspect that seemed realistically rendered to him was the attitude of these elite soldiers: “we can clearly see the flexible and more relaxed side that exists in these units, more than anywhere else“, as well as the way the psychological side is explored: “it allows you to identify with the characters, they are not just fighters. They have a life and it’s interesting to see how they combine this personal life with their professional life.

Alexandre Alex also specifies that the central operation in Black heartsthe exfiltration of the family members of a local Daesh leader – is completely realistic and that it is a relatively common practice when it comes to obtaining crucial information. Therefore, it gives a “rating” of 15/20 to the realism of the series, a realism which therefore contributes significantly to its quality.
