Yvan Attal misses the transition to thriller
After making the drama Human thingswhich was the opportunity to reveal the actress Suzanne Jouannet, Yvan Attal returns both in front and behind the camera with this time a thriller entitled A roll of the dice. A film inspired by a rather comical text, Ball trap by Éric Assous, from which Yvan Attal took something darker and more serious. A choice that was anything but sensible given the result, which probably would have been more acceptable with a pinch of irony.
From the moment you open it, you can feel that something is wrong. Yvan Attal, asleep and sweating, struggles in the middle of a nightmare. The actor’s face is transposed by clouds in front of Corcovado and terrible lightning appears. The man wakes up and we hear a voice off screen, which unfortunately continues to accompany the images. Bad taste and obsolescence they are therefore announced from the beginning, and we will have to hold on until the end.

As the police knock on Mathieu’s (Yvan Attal) door, a flashback is called for. We learn that, years before, he was her best friend Vincent (Guillaume Canet) intervened to save Mathieu and his family. Scarred by this event, Mathieu decides to leave the dangerous capital to live on the French Riviera. Vincent will help him find a new job in real estate and they will both soon become rich. Enough to have a lower-middle-class life. Except that Mathieu will discover that his best friend has a lover, Elsa (Alma Jodorowsky). And here’s the drama. Why Delphine (Maïwenn)Vincent’s wife, it doesn’t take her long to discover the truth…
A roll of the dice : a film that is too serious and poorly managed
If, as the trailer implied, Elsa was found immediately dead, A roll of the dice it could have resulted in a thriller film in which all the protagonists could have been guilty. But this is not the case, since the scenario prefers to linger on stories of infidelity, jealousy and unfulfilled desire, despite being of a profoundly annoying modesty. And when tragedy finally comes, no truth to seek for the spectator, the first witness of what happened.
A roll of the dice therefore it does not offer any mystery to solve, but requires us to follow characters, one more unpleasant than the other, who try to get out of this dark story. Because Yvan Attal wants to deal with this guilt and cowardice. We feel this desire to privilege the psychological aspect. But it would still be necessary, either to add a touch of spice, or to demonstrate a real mastery of the genre. This is evidently not the case with the director, whose lapses in taste do not allow us to be carried away by his words.

Instead we are witnessing a series of clichés, twists and situations worthy of a TV movieand ridiculous dialogues that would almost make the film lean towards comedy. You have to see Marie-Josée Croze (Juliette, Mathieu’s wife) marvel at her friends’ holiday in Brazil, declaring: “Rio de Janeiro, just the name makes you dream“. For the audience, it’s pretty funny.
Because there is no irony in Yvan Attal. This prevents his throw, usually at level, from showing accuracy. If Maïwenn and Alma Jodorowsky are doing well, the same is less true for Guillaume Canet, who in our opinion more lost than anything else. Marie-Josée Croze is, for her part, sadly anecdotal, while Yvan Attal, who at least presupposes playing the wrong roleturns out to be unintentionally embarrassing, like his job.
