Former vocalist and guitarist recalls music released at the band’s peak and says he burst out laughing because he considered the verses very funny
Even though he no longer sees himself singing the songs of Raimundos, Rodolfo Abrantesthe band’s former vocalist and guitarist, still has a good laugh with them. Or at least one in specific.
During podcast interview Ticaracaticast (via TMDQA!), the singer — who left the group almost 25 years ago to follow the path of religion and become an evangelical pastor — said he almost “vomited laughing” when remembering one of the songs released on the album Only at Forevis (1999), at the band’s commercial peak. It’s about the music “Pompem”.
Rodolfo initially explained the context that led him to revisit it:
“One of these days, a guy sent me a cut on Instagram and tagged me. It was him singing a song by Raimundoswhich I didn’t remember, because I don’t remember. If I had to sing an entire song from Raimundos Today I was going to pay attention, because I don’t remember.
He continued:
“Then, the guy sent me this song called ‘Pompem‘, I didn’t remember her. I looked up the lyrics and, seriously, I almost threw up from laughing so hard. I had a crisis and said: ‘my brother, that’s crazy’. Like, I understand that it’s funny, but the burden I put on that… You know that street where you got beaten up and left in a coma? Go back there again about ten times a week, spiritually.”
Raimundos and “Pompem”
“Pompem” tells the “story” of a city girl who goes to live in the “bush” and ends up being impressed by the variety of “snakes”. The song, based on the double-meaning “5th grade” humor, uses verses such as:
“Little girl from the city went to the woods and got loose
She was stung so much, she was filled with heat (…)
Little girl from the city went to the bush and moved
She married a black fly since the name she liked
The craziest caiçara, with knotted hair
He changed modern life, he won’t let go of the vine anymore”
The chorus says:
“Get in the closet. Kneel down, you’ll have to pray
Lay down on the web, you evil spider, it will devour me.”
Rodolfo Abrantes would not return to the band
In the same interview, Rodolfo explained why he would not even consider returning to Raimundoseven though you can become “rich overnight”:
“I wouldn’t be able to look in the mirror. (…) Raimundos It’s not a band I abandoned, it’s a life I left. And I bled to leave. It cost blood, first from my God.”
