Borderlinea thriller that will make noise

At the end of its 36th edition, the feature film jury of the Premiers Plans d’Angers 2024 Festival awarded the film Borderlineawarded with the Grand Jury Prize AND Female Actor Award for the actress Bruna Cusi. Borderline tells a simple story, that of a couple from Barcelona who moves to the United States. Everything is in order and the transatlantic flight is going well but, upon their arrival at Newark airport, the border police will subject them to a terrible interrogation…

Borderlinepreviously titled At the entrance, is written and directed by Alejandro Rojas and Juan Sebastian Vasquez, two Venezuelan directors for whom this is their first feature film. If we exclude the sequences of departure from Spain and arrival in the United States, almost all Borderline takes place in behind closed doorsbetween the four walls of an interrogation room, where Diego (Alberto Amman) and Elena (Bruna Cusi) must answer the increasingly personal and aggressive questions of agents Barrett (Ben Temple) and Vasquez (Laura Gomez).

Did they tell the whole truth about the reasons that led them to emigrate to the United States? Has Diego, who is a Venezuelan national, ever attempted to enter American territory? Do the couple really love each other or are Diego and Elena only together to encourage their immigration? As the interrogation progresses, more so than their entry into American territory their own couple being dissected and put in danger…

The performances of the two actors are formidable, both she and he, who act brilliantly loss of control progressive and the doubt that creeps into them when faced with the American agents. The staging, sober and dynamic, also subtly avoids the boredom that can easily be generated by the ordinary shot/reverse shot scheme of this type of confrontation.

A long road to get to theaters

From November 2022 and a first presentation at the Tallinn Dark Nights Film Festival in Estonia, Borderline appeared at several festivals. At SXSW in January 2023, in March at the Malaga Film Festival then in April at Reims International Crime Film Festival. There, he was the winner of the Police Jury Award AND Audience Award.

At the time the film, still titled At the entrance, did not yet have a French distributor. But a month later, in May 2023, we learned that the company Condor Distribution had acquired the rights for France. Its director Alexis Mas explained it :

Upon Entry offers the kind of hybrid experience we love to bring to audiences. Behind the promise of a conceptual and innovative thriller, we find a reflection on life as a couple.
