Oscar 2024: where has Margot Robbie gone?
Last week, the Academy revealed the nominations for the 96th Academy Awards. It’s no surprise that it is Oppenheimer by Christopher Nolan which received the most mentions, with a total of thirteen mentions. Poor creatures follows suit with eleven mentions and Barbie is also well represented with eight nominations, including Best Film. In terms of performances, the film also received two nominations: one for Ryan Gosling (best supporting actor) and one for America Ferrara (Best Supporting Actress).
But to everyone’s surprise, Margot Robbie was not favored by the Academy and was not nominated for best actress for her portrayal of the famous doll. Nor was Greta Gerwig cited as the film’s best director. The two are still nominated as producers since the “best film” category rewards productions, not directors.
The actress reacts
These absences of nominations on the part of Greta Gerwig and Margot Robbie have sparked many reactions, both in the industry and among the public. Ryan Gosling immediately stepped up to the plate to say his misunderstanding faced with these two absences, while Greta Gerwig and Margot Robbie are at the very origin of the project. She confided that the film wouldn’t have existed without them, and that she had trouble understanding how the Oscars could ignore them. America Ferrara also wanted to speak.
A week later, it’s Margot Robbie’s turn to talk about the topic. And unlike her playmates, she doesn’t regret not being nominated:
It’s impossible to feel sad when you realize how privileged you are. Seeing everyone get the recognition they deserve is just amazing, especially the Best Picture nomination. Our goal was to create something that would shake and influence culture, to leave a significant footprint. And we have already achieved this goal, far beyond our wildest dreams. This is undoubtedly the greatest reward we could hope for from this adventure.
declared the Barbie interpreter into the microphone of Varietyadding, however, that she would have liked to see Greta Gerwig get a nomination for best director:
Obviously I think Greta should be named director. What she accomplished is a once-in-a-lifetime feat. What she has achieved is truly exceptional. But it was an incredible year for all films.
