The platform: a great success for Netflix
Released on Netflix during the confinement in March 2020, the dystopian thriller The platform had unleashed passions. Directed by Galder Gaztelu-Urrutia, it is set in a tower-shaped prison called “the pit”, where inmates (two per “cell”) are housed on different levels.
In the center of each level is a platform that descends every day, carrying food. Those at the higher levels eat their fill, while those lower down get less and less, or nothing at all. causing desperation and violence. Each month, levels are randomly reassigned.
The protagonist, Goreng, wakes up every month on a different level, which allows him to discover the horrors and inequalities that exist in the “pit”. He does everything to stop this well-oiled system. The movie is obviously a metaphor for society and the unequal distribution of wealth.
The platform was a huge success when it was released online worldwide. In just four weekshad surpassed 50 million views, becoming one of the most watched Netflix films in history, and the third most watched non-English language film. It was first in 2020, but has since been surpassed Troll AND Non-existent place.
A highly anticipated sequel
Platform 2 it was made official by Netflix in May 2023, which also revealed the first photos of this sequel also directed by Galder Gaztelu-Urrutia. Two new inmates were discovered there, still imprisoned inside this tower built around the “pit”.
But since last May, Netflix had no longer communicated information about the film, and no release date had been revealed.
