Sébastien Vaniček wins after that Parasites
It is with great surprise that we learned of the development of a new film on February 6, 2024 evil Dead (horrible saga started by Sam Raimi), with Sébastien Vaniček in the lead. A surprising choice given that the Frenchman only directed one feature film, Excellent Parasites. But his survival, in which a building is invaded by spiders, left its mark. If on the side of CinemaSeries we talked about it a lot, considering Parasites AS one of the best horror films of 2023, it is also outside our borders that Sébastien Vaniček’s proposal has caused a stir. The director then attracted the attention of Ghost House Pictures (Sam Raimi’s production company) who contacted him to direct the next spin-off ofevil Dead.
Following this announcement, the director spoke with First to talk about the underside of this project. He specifically reveals that he wanted to make sure he did creative freedom. Which is tricky when you work for American studios. But with Ghost House Pictures, which directly”asked to think about an Evil Dead movie“, things were different.
I set my requirements: shooting with my technicians, doing post-production in France, writing the screenplay… It was nice, it was their idea that it was a 100% original film, over which I would have total control . (…) Many signals were green. So, when they officially made the proposal, I was able to get some guarantees.
The director will make “his” Evil Dead
Bold, Sébastien Vaniček was therefore able to impose his first ideas, but also those of Florent Bernard, co-author of Parasitesand who will also writeevil Dead. It was together that they posed the basis of the next filmsince Ghost House Pictures didn’t have a script, but was looking to receive a project.
When I finally went to Los Angeles, I had under my arm a 15-page file of drawings, exactly what I had done for Vermin. I put it on the table and told them that this was what our Evil Dead would look like for me and Florent. They fell for it. Evidently they had received other offers, but nothing had happened.
Without providing details on the plot, Sébastien Vaniček however specified that filming will take place in New Zealand (as with previous films), and suggested that the film could be behind closed doors. Furthermore, even if the feature film will be shot in English, the main character will be a Frenchmanwho speaks English and who is “surrounded by American characters“. The director hopes so”keep your French DNA“.
Finally, fans ofevil Dead might be surprised by the result, since Sébastien Vaniček wants to make a film that “bears his signature“, while being consistent with the universe. And with Aliens refers tothe idea doesn’t seem absurd.
All in all and in all humility, I want to make a James Cameron move with Aliens. That is to say, let us know that this Evil Dead is mine, that it bears my signature. (…) I don’t want to get lost in a franchise and just make another Evil Dead. It really needs to stand out from the crowd.
It remains to be hoped that Ghost House Pictures’ promises will be kept and that Sébastien Vaniček will maintain this freedom during filming. But at first glance, this project is tempting. And we can only congratulate the young filmmaker for wanting above all to follow his ideas.
