Jean Reno therefore collects numerous roles, and the public inevitably remembers the end of the 80s and 90s which revealed him at the highest levels, in particular with Subway AND The big blue, Visitors, Lion OR Mission Impossible. Every spectator has his favorite character: Godefroy de Montmirail for comedy lovers, Léon for thriller lovers, Enzo Molinari for fans of diving into the ocean…

“I really liked this character”

But who would be your favorite character? On the occasion of the cinema release of Retirement home 2, we were able to meet him and then ask him the question: in his entire filmography, is there a character that he particularly cares about? His response is surprising (excerpt from 2’35 in the video at the top of the article), and in full below.

Obviously it’s easier to say, “Hey, Léon, this will resonate.” There’s one that… Roseanna, “For the Love of Roseanna.” This is a guy who promised his wife, who has cancer, to save a place for her in the cemetery, and the cemetery is full. It’s a black comedy that I made a long time ago (1997, ed.), and while you were asking me the question the character appeared to me. It’s an American film that we shot in Italy.

I see myself again with the Vespa, my character was called Marcello. Like in Fellini’s “La Dolce Vita”. I really liked this character. The basis of my characters is often loneliness. Also in Godefroy de Montmirail. There is a quest, a quest to remain in humanity, in who we all are together.

For the love of Roseanna, directed by Paul Weiland and starring Mercedes Ruehl as Roseanna, wasn’t exactly a success. Let’s face it, it was actually a sensational commercial failure with only 25,000 admissions in France and American takings equal to $123,000

If the critics, at the time of its release, noted above all the anecdotal character of the film, some, like Roger Ebert, they point out, however, that the actors are convincing in embodying these big-hearted characters. Which Jean Reno also remembered, explaining that he really liked this character.
