Belle and Sébastien: an extraordinary friendship

The adventure Belle and Sebastiano debuted on television with a black and white series, written and directed by Cécile Aubry. The story followed the adventures of Sébastien, a young orphan, and Belle, a Pyrenean dog, as they navigated the challenges and wonders of the French Alps.

The series immediately won over the public, becoming a beloved classic of French television. Shortly after the success of the series, Cécile Aubry adapted the story into a series of children’s novels, which served as the basis for adaptation into a Japanese animated series, broadcast in the 1980s.

New life

In 2013, Belle and Sébastien came to the big screen for the first time in a film directed by Nicolas Vanier. Great success in theaters with nearly three million entries, revisits the original story by setting it during World War II. Sébastien, a young orphan, befriends Belle, a Pyrenean dog considered by the villagers to be a ferocious beast. Together they will have many adventures, including helping to protect Jews fleeing from Nazi occupation.

Given the success of the first film, a sequel, Belle and Sébastien: the adventure continues, was created in 2015, under the direction of Christian Duguay. This second work is set in 1945 and Sébastien goes looking for Angelina, accompanied by Belle, when he discovers that she was on board a plane that crashed in the mountains.

Once again it was a success in theaters with almost two million viewers. A success that gave rise to a third work, Belle and Sebastian 3: The Final Chapter, released in 2018, directed by Clovis Cornillac. In this ending, Sébastien enters adolescence, and Belle became the mother of three little puppies. When the dog’s former owner reappears and wants her back, Sébastien finds himself facing a terrible threat and will do anything to protect his friend and her little ones.

At the box office, this third film attracted more than one and a half million spectators, bringing the total of the saga to more than six million viewers in France. A truly great success with the public for this franchise, already available in its entirety on Netflix.
