Adam Sandler stands out

First the ones with the wife. But also the memories of his father and his ties with the Communist Party at the time of the fall of the Czechoslovakian regime at the end of the 1980s. Astronaut so show Jakub’s long introspection about his life and brings out his fears, his anxieties, his fears, his disappointments, etc. If we immediately ask ourselves whether Hanuš is real or an invention of Jakub’s delusional mind, the answer does not matter, since the topic is elsewhere.

Adapted from the novel An astronaut in Bohemia (2017) by Jaroslav Kalfař, Astronaut he didn’t try to transpose the story elsewhere. Jakub and the other characters are Czech and a part of the history of the Czech Republic is evoked here. Which does not necessarily make the feature film very accessible to the general public. The slow pace and despite this, the long conversations that follow one another do not help in the long runa moving first part.

Adam Sandler’s performance should also be highlighted. And this idea of seeing a man ready to sink into space to avoid facing his traumas is something overwhelming. Except that Johan Renck fails to completely fascinate. Despite the obvious influence of Solaris (1972), the director does not continue his approach which ultimately remains too superficial. In fact, it is not enough to release psychological and philosophical questions into space to create a truly relevant work.
