Richard Lewis retires
If his notoriety in France was limited, Richard Lewis was a living legend of stand-up and humor in the United States. Died of cardiac arrest at the age of 76, on February 27, 2024 in Los Angeles, he revealed himself on stage and in Tonight’s show in the 1970s, before experiencing wider recognition in the 1980s and 1990s, a recurring guest on David Letterman’s shows. Genius of a dark humorneurotic and full of self-irony, Richard Lewis laughed at everything and above all at himself, not hesitating to discuss his alcoholism and drug addiction in public.

Richard and I were born three days apart in the same hospital and for most of my life he was like a brother to me. He had that rare combination of being the funniest and sweetest person at the same time. But today he made me cry and I will never forgive him for that.
