Black butterfliesor the story of a murderer
Created by Bruno Merle and Olivier Abbou, Black butterflies It’s a dark thriller. Broadcast for the first time by Arte on 22 September 2022, it was then accompanied by the six-episode miniseries in the Netflix catalog on October 14 of the same year. If it was already a success when it first aired, its arrival on the streaming platform attracted even more audiences. All the better, because the work is truly worth the detour. We follow Adrien Winckler, aka Mody, an uninspired writer. One day he is contacted by Albert, an old man who wishes to meet him so he can write his story. Or rather, their story, with Solange.
So Adrien goes to this big house of Albert’s, in the middle of nowhere, in the middle of nature, around Aras. The man tells him about his youth, shortly after the Second World War, and a childhood already marked by violence. Violence to defend little Solange from the bullying of other children. After that the two will be inseparable.

A love story is therefore born between the two and Albert’s story appears, at the beginning, rather classic. Until the old man described it in a chilling way their first murder, that of two brothers after one of them attempted to rape Solange. This is the beginning ofa life as a serial killer, whose story will fascinate Adrien and bring out his old demons. At the same time, Carrel, a police officer, will conduct an investigation into these crimes committed forty years ago.
The casting of the series
Bring Black butterflieswe find Nicolas Duvauchelle as Adrien while Niels Arestrup presents a disturbing Albert. The young version of her is played by Axel Granberger while Alyzée Costes plays Solange. Finally, we would like to point out the presence ofAlice Belaïdi in the role of Nora, Adrien’s partner, and Sami Bouajila in Carrel’s. A casting that changes slightly in the last episode as Alyzée Costes is replaced by another actress, following the crazy revelation in episode 5.

We won’t say more so as not to spoil those who haven’t seen the series yet. But this choice was motivated (via Assigned) Of the different twists that the audience discovers as it progresseswho then realizes that what he saw of Albert’s past could be actual flashbacks, a story transformed by Albert or even a representation of Adrien’s novel…
Is the series based on a true story or a novel?
On September 7, 2022 he was released the novel Black butterflies. However, it is not the work that inspires the series, but rather the opposite. In fact, this book is very simple the novel that Adrien writes in the program. The creators imagined this unique approach of a “novel based on an audiovisual work that is not a novel“. They explain their will the press kit :
The book will give viewers a side-by-side look at the series and maybe even scenes that contradict it!
For this, Bruno Merle and Olivier Abbou collaborated with Gabriel Katz (even if Mody is the one mentioned on the cover). The latter must have written the novel at the same time as the series shot to be able to use it in certain sequences.
It was interesting to work with the writer of the book, who had to follow us during the filming to provide the material we would film and listen to.
We might then think that behind this rich and surprising tale lies a true story. We know that news tends to inspire series. But again, this is not the case. The creators specified that they had studied the stories of couples of murderers but without addressing a specific case.
Their story is not based on a true story. But it is obvious that there have been many couples of serial killers. There were some very true stories. Of course we did our job by reading what needed to be read and watching the few films that dealt with the topic. But there is no specific case that inspired us to write this story.
