The Neverending Story: from novel to film
Before being a film, The Neverending Story it is first and foremost a fantasy novel for children written by the German author Michael Ende and published in 1979 with the original title Die unendliche Geschichtethen translated all over the world.
The story follows the adventures of Bastien, a boy mistreated at school, who finds refuge in reading a magical book that takes him to the fantasy world of Fantasia, a place threatened by a destructive evil called the Void. . Through this imaginary journey, Bastien encounters various fantastical characters and creatures, and discovers that he has a central role in saving Fantasia. In particular, she meets Atreyu, a boy the same age as her, with a warrior soul, and Falkor, a lucky dragon.
For children born in the 80s The Neverending Story, is above all the film directed by Wolfgang Petersen, with Barret Oliver in the role of Bastien, and its unforgettable soundtrack. The film roughly covers the first half of the book, focusing on the discovery of the book and young Bastien’s quest to save Fantasia and its inhabitants. One scene in particular left its mark on an entire generation : that of the death of Artax, Atreyu’s horse, buried in the swamp of melancholy.
New films are in preparation
After this first film released in 1984 which the author did not appreciate, The Neverending Story it had other more discreet film adaptations, released in 1990 and 1995. An animated series also saw the light of day in 1996 and a live action in 2001.
Forty years after the release of the cult feature film, Bastien’s story will soon return to our screens. As we learn Varietythe rights to adapt the novel were in fact acquired by See-Saw Films Productions (already responsible for successful adaptations such as A king’s speech, Lion, The power of the dog OR Slow horses).
According to initial information, there will be several films, which will cover the entire novel by Michael Endeand will introduce Fantasia’s story to “a whole new generation of moviegoers.”
Adaptation rights The Neverending Story have been hotly contested in recent years, and the rights holders said they had received “hundreds of proposals” from the film industry, but also from streaming platforms. They say they have found the “ideal partner” who seemed most suitable to transpose this magical story once again onto the big screen.
The next step for See-Saw Films is now to assemble a creative team to bring this reboot of the saga to life. The number of films that will be released in theaters has not yet been revealed.
