“A shot-for-shot remake had no interest”: Julien Leclercq talks to us about his Wages of Fear on Netflix

The wages of fear soon on Netflix

Since 2020 and very successful Earth and blood, the collaboration between Julien Leclercq and Netflix is fruitful. His movie Sentinel, added to the platform in early March 2021, was the most-watched Netflix film in the United States during its first week. The same year we also discovered his series Thievescreated for Netflix with Hamid Hlioua and derived from his 2016 film of the same name. The series is a success and a second season comes out in February 2023. The film Thieves was added to the catalog on December 31, 2023 and was a success with the public. It is therefore with this very solid story that Julien Leclercq has taken charge of a new film The wages of fear for Netflix, available from March 29, 2024.

This new action film obviously echoes Henri-Georges Clouzot’s great film of the same name released in 1953, an extreme suspense thriller, awarded the International Grand Prix (formerly Palme d’Or) at the Cannes Film Festival and the Best Actor Award to Charles Vanel. But as Julien Leclercq explained to us, This is in no way a remake.but rather than a restartwith themes and characters very different from those of the original work.

“It’s a 2024 movie”

Julien Leclercq : Doing a shot-by-shot, character-by-character remake didn’t interest me. Rather, it’s what we call a “reboot.” I keep the heart of the script, which is this suicide mission of crossing a desert with nitroglycerin to put out a fire. But as a director, it didn’t make sense to redo shot by shot…

It’s quite funny to see things like: “So it’s Franck Gastambide playing the role of Yves Montand…”. No not at all. It’s a 2024 film. “The Wages of Fear” is 70 years old, it’s not the same themes. The role of women is completely different. What happens in the original film with Vera Clouzot is quite complicated, today it doesn’t work, it’s off topic. “The Wages of Fear” is a fantastic film, a cult film, but I was interested in being contacted about rebooting it.

The proposal is excellent and I tell myself that… given the fact of working with Netflix again, perhaps 0.2% of future viewers have seen the original film. We are French, we love cinema, we love old cinemas, but I don’t want to target niche markets. I’m very respectful and I’m a big fan of the original film. My dad was a truck driver and it was his favorite movie, it’s something that rocked my childhood. But with great respect for Clouzot and the original work, I wanted to tell my story, with my characters, in 2024.
