Locarno Film Festival Green Environmental Film Fund, Award supported by the WWF

The Locarno Film Festival is on the green, literally and figuratively, with a range of programs aimed at raising awareness of environmental issues.

At the 75th edition, which will take place from August 3 to 13, Locarno will present a new award, the Pardo Verde WWF, presented in collaboration with the environmental group World Wildlife Fund, for the film that best captures an environmental problem and offers “new interpretations and challenging for the public”. That inspire change. The award will be a bright green version of Locarno’s Traditional Golden Leopard Award.

Locarno will also launch a new Green Film Fund to provide financial assistance for films related to environmental issues. The foundation will function similarly to The Films After Tomorrow program in Locarno, which began during the 2020 COVID pandemic, making Locarno a true financial sponsor of independent film projects. Locarno said he plans to make greater use of “themed film funds” in the coming years to strengthen his position “as a catalyst for change and review the future of cinema.”

While the Green Film Fund is still in development, Locarno said the total cost of the project will be six figures and the fund expects up to three projects a year.

Locarno has been a climate-neutral phenomenon since 2010 and is committed to a series of sustainability goals set by the United Nations. Last year, it began publishing an annual sustainability report that documents progress toward its green goals.

“We are starting a new chapter in the history of Locarno Film Festival, an event that has always focused on everyday themes,” said Rafael Brunschig, managing director of Locarno, in a statement. “Sustainability is a basic need on which modern society must focus its efforts. Right now, we need to rethink our approach and find new tools to overcome the challenges of the future. “A cultural event like Locarno can generate a new perspective, promote and disseminate encouraging films and filmmakers that respect the ecosystem and contain news that can raise public awareness”.
