Booba goes to the series
At 47, the Duke of Boulogne, rapper and successful entrepreneur, adds new strings to his bow. Booba, whose real name is Elie Yaffa, is in fact co-creator, co-writer and actor of the series Ourikaa new crime series that has aired on Prime Video since then April 28, 2024.
After years of development, the seven episodes of the first season ofOurika They’ve finally arrived, and it’s a really nice discovery. Created by Elie Yaffa, Clément Gournay and Clément Godard, with writing supervision by Marine Francou, a recognized screenwriter who has notably worked on several seasons of the monument Gearssays Ourika the fate of a family of traffickerstaking the urban riots of 2005 as context.
We discover Moussa Jebli (Salim Kechiouche), head of a cannabis import and distribution network, and his younger brother Driss (Adame Bessa). The latter keeps away from the family’s criminal affairs, following a brilliant university path and intending to pursue careers in the legal or financial field. When Moussa is jailed, the Jebli family is ruined and he becomes the target of his former partners-turned-competitors. To protect his mother, not disappoint his brother, and simply survive, Driss will take matters into his own hands. He will soon have to get used to the violence and the codes of the environment, and be wary of a determined and ambitious young policeman, William (Noham Edje).

A very inspired casting
Ourika registers with humility in the tradition of the detective novel, and as such takes on the banality of its plot. On the one hand a crime family in tension, on the other dangerous adversaries, policemen and other criminals. Investigations, chases, harsh arrests, murders and shootings… Everything that constitutes the adventures of a detective drama is there, told with relative simplicity of writing and staged with a certain ambition – think in particular of the highly successful introductory sequence.
It is therefore on this waiting canvas that the actors and actresses of the series will flourish. We must therefore highlight the beautiful performances of the main cast. Salim Kechiouche, Adam Bessa and Noham Edje – the first two recognized and expert actors, the third a revelation – embody their characters and their multiple antagonisms with intensity. We also note the always impeccable presence of Slimane Dazi. They are noticeably united in the image by Buba himself, who plays a dangerous trafficker, Metis, with whom the Djebli family has long had a troubled relationship…
What is surprising, and a nice surprise, is that on the screen the famous rapper does not show excesses, indignation orEgo Trip. Far from his role as a rapper and from that of an influencer/controversist – sometimes prone to conspiracy theories -, here too he reveals himself to be gifted with impressive charisma and a real presence in the image. Although he does not have all the colors of a professional actor’s palette, he is completely credible and effective in the role of this taciturn criminal, disciplined and sensitive to certain values such as honor and respect for society, his word given.
A success
The first three episodes are particularly catchy, lively and offer a good feeling of balance the expected and the new. Once the family, hard-pressed by debt and on the verge of collapse, leaves for Morocco, to “their” land of Ourika, the intrigue quickly intensifies. a higher leveladdressing the issue of international cooperation in the fight against drug trafficking.
Later, another ellipse will take us back to Paris where Driss has definitively taken control of the market. We can therefore criticize the fast nature of these ellipses and of the second part of the series, which contrasts with the patience of its beginning. Ultimately, the series’ realism diminished.
But Ourika however, it displays some solid qualities. In addition to an ideal casting, the original soundtrack provided by the Animalsons duo, historic composers and producers of Booba, is very well doneand drops a few here and there shots of Booba, whose cult”Listen carefully“.
The series is otherwise visually compelling, with twitchy handheld camerawork and lovely cinematography. Ourika It doesn’t have all the lightsAthena nor the great association between realism and spectacular manner Bac North, which can leave a little taste of unfinished business. But actually, maybe earlier a season 2 which will push the sliders, the familiarity issued by Ourika and the humility of his proposal paradoxically constitute his strength. And prevent it from falling into the traps of posturing and extravagance that too often plague the genre.
