M3GAN: another success from Blumhouse
Released at the end of 2022, the horror film M3GAN was born under a lucky star: that of James Wan and Jason Blum who joined forces again after the saga Insidious to produce the feature film, directed by Gerard Johnstone (Homebound).
The story revolves around Gemma (played by Allison Williams), who, faced with the custody of her niece Cady (Violet McGraw) following a tragic car accident that took the lives of the latter’s parents, finds herself overwhelmed by her responsibilities . Between her work commitments and the challenge of building a relationship of trust with Cady, Gemma chooses a technological solution: she finalizes the development of a doll animated by advanced artificial intelligencedesigned to interact and become friends with children.

The relationship that develops between Cady and M3GAN seems idyllic at first. The doll, thanks to its revolutionary design, gives immediate comfort to the little girl. However, the technology behind the toy, although innovative, hides defects due to a still experimental operating system. The protection mission towards Cady that M3GAN holds dear quickly shifts towards unpredictable and destructive behavior.
A sequel already announced
With a modest production budget of $12 million, the film was a box office success, grossing over $180 million worldwide. The Blumhouse recipe therefore proved, once again, to be very effective. In addition to this resounding cinematic success, the film has also been the source of numerous Internet misappropriations, due to a macabre doll dance sequence. Its popularity exploded online, further increasing theater attendance.
After this success, a sequel to M3GAN has been made official by Blumhouse and will be released in theaters in 2025.
