With 21 films under his belt, Luc Besson revealed how he talked to Quentin Tarantino about retiring at the beginning of his career
Director of films such as Dogman (2023), The professional (1994), The fifth Element (1997), Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets (2017) and Arthur and the Minimoys (2006), Luc Besson claimed how Quentin Tarantino “stole” his idea of retiring after 10 films.
It is worth remembering how Tarantino is in pre-production The Movie Critic, which will be the tenth film of his career. Throughout the last few films, he always talked about how he would stop acting as a director after this production. Besson, on the other hand, has 21 feature films under his belt.
During an interview with The Discourse Podcast (via IndieWire), Besson commented how Tarantino used him as a model for his own career. “The funny thing is, I said that to Tarantino a long time ago… so he copied me,” he claimed. “No, I was honest when I said that. I said that after having made six or seven films. And it was a way to focus and say, ‘If I only have 10 bullets, I need to be careful with the last three.'”
Because at that time, in Hollywoodthere were a lot of sirens coming to me saying, ‘Here’s the script,’ and the projects they proposed to me weren’t bad, but they were sequels – it was the movie machine. Hollywood. And they propose a lot of money.
“I don’t want to. I want to remain myself, like remain pure. So I need to find a way to resist the songs of these sirens,” the filmmaker continued. “And the way I did that was to say, ‘I’m going to do 10, so if I have two more movies, I can’t do that. I need to do something more like what I want.'”
At the moment, Luc Besson works on the next film, titled Dracula: A Love Tale and starring Christoph Waltz It is Caleb Landry Jones. At the The Discourse Podcasthe revealed how his retirement could be on the horizon.
“So maybe I should do one or two more because I still have a lot of [a dizer]. Well now I can tell you, I’m going to make three [filmes] and then I stop. Ah, so we finished after them. So, after the Draculathere are two more, and I won’t bother you after that.
