Director Karyn Kusama revealed in an interview that Diablo Cody is already writing the sequel to the teen horror starring Megan Fox and Amanda Seyfried
More than 15 years after launch, Hell Girlhorror starring Megan Fox (Transformers) and Amanda Seyfried (Mamma Mia!), may be about to get a sequel. In an interview with Deadlinethe director Karyn Kusama (The Weight of the Past) revealed that the screenwriter Diablo Cody is already developing a sequel to the 2009 film, describing the idea as “fun and crazy like the first film”.
“I know she’s working on it now, and I’m really excited to see what comes out of it.”, he said Kusama. “I know a little about the structure of the story, but I can’t reveal anything. All I can say is that it sounds as fun and insane as the original. I have no doubt that Diablo will do something absolutely incredible.”
Kusama commented that seeing the film rediscovered by the public is one of the greatest rewards of his career. “I’m so grateful he found his audience“, he said. “The part of me that has a healthy ego—and that I try to keep in check—is very flattered by this. The idea that Hell Girl is someone’s ‘Godfather’ makes me laugh all the way down to my toes.”
Released in 2009 and written by Diablo Cody (Juno), Hell Girl mixes acidic humor and supernatural horror to tell the story of a cheerleader possessed by a demon. Although it was poorly publicized at the time — and undermined by media misogyny surrounding Fox —, the film became a cult classic in the following years, especially among young women and fans of feminist horror. The film is available in the Disney+ catalog.
