The story centers on the character of László de Almásy, a Hungarian cartographer and explorer, played by Ralph Fiennes, whose body is ravaged by severe burns following a plane crash. Found in the desert by the Allies, he is cared for in an isolated Italian monastery by Hana, a busy Canadian nurse played by Juliette Binoche. Through the care she offers him, a relationship of trust and affection develops between them, which allows Almasy to remember her tumultuous past.

A true inspiration

Flashbacks immerse us in the story of an all-consuming passion between Almasy and Katherine Clifton, a married woman played by Kristin Scott Thomas. Their intense and tragic love story takes place when the world is on the brink of chaos. We understand that this story haunts him, until the final shot of the feature film.

The character of László de Almasy really existed. He discovered the Zerzura oasis in the Sahara in particular in the early 1930s. But the inspiration stops there, he never had a plane crash in the desert during the Second World War and died of illness in 1951 in Austria .

The English Patient was a major success in theaters, grossing over $231 million at the global box office. In France more than two million spectators went to see it at the cinema.

At the Oscars the film was a huge success, winning nine statuettes : Best Film, Best Supporting Actress for Juliette Binoche, Best Director, Best Sound, Best Cinematography, Best Art Direction, Best Costume Design and Best Editing.
