Yet very different from the manga, this live-action series adaptation is a hit on Netflix

Parasite: the greyan original adaptation

Manga fans Parasite (published between 1988 and 1994) were certainly a little surprised by it Parasite: the grey, the live-action Netflix series. Indeed, the show appears very different from the work of Hitoshi Iwaaki, which gave rise to a 24-episode animated series, broadcast between 2014 and 2015. We followed Shin’ichi Izumi, a Japanese high school student who sees a species of larva try to enter his ear. At the last moment the boy moves away and the larva finally enters through his hand. The parasite cannot therefore fully fuse and ultimately has to coexist with the teenager.

The idea is quite similar in Parasite: the grey which therefore happens in the same universe, but tells a different story, in South Korea. This time we follow Jeong Su-in (Jeon So-nee), a young woman who experienced great suffering in her youth due to her father’s abuse. While she leads a discreet life as a cashier in a supermarket, she finds herself confronted with a disgruntled customer. The latter, who is actually schizophrenic, decides to attack him after work. He hits her with her car and stabs her several times.

As he prepares to finish it, an alien larva enters the young woman’s ear. Given her injuries, the parasite must first heal her, which prevents it from merging seamlessly with its victim. However, he manages to intervene to protect this body and kills Jeong Su-in’s attacker.

The other big difference with the original manga is that in Parasite: the grey Jeong Su-in cannot directly interact with this parasite. This can only take ownership of your body and mind for 15 minutes if he is in danger. Which makes the idea of survival that motivates the parasite even more interesting. Furthermore, being considered a mutant, Jeong Su-in can’t really ally herself with her parasite’s peers, who decide to band together to face the men who are chasing her: Gray unit. His only support will therefore be a small criminal looking for his sister and the policeman who helped him in his youth.
