Oppenheimer was released in Japanese theaters
It was a delicate issue. Nine months after its release in American theaters, the film Oppenheimer by Christopher Nolan, was finally released on Japanese screens at the end of March. The arrival of the box office star of 2023 in this country has been complicatedgiven that it is the invention of the atomic bomb that caused the nuclear attack on Hiroshima and Nagasaki during World War II.
The absence of the Japanese point of view and the human and material damage caused by the two bombs had been criticized on several occasions, in particular by Spike Lee, at the time of its diffusion throughout the world. Criticisms to which Christopher Nolan responded, arguing that he wanted to tell the story of him in the most subjective way possible, and stay as close as possible to the main character of him, even when attacks occur. He had in fact confided that, after the Trinity test carried out, Oppenheimer was “in the same position as the rest of America, and had heard on the radio about the bombing of Hiroshima”.
Second the first information, Japanese audiences are divided on the film. While some recognize its historical interest, others, like the former mayor of Hiroshima, regret the absence of the Japanese point of view and the damage caused by the bombings. For him “the film confirms the conclusion that the atomic bomb was used to save the lives of Americans”.
A new record for Christopher Nolan
Oppenheimer’s controversial release in Japan helped the film set a new box office record. Thus, it became the the greatest success for Christopher Nolan internationallythus exceeding the score of The Dark Knight Risesreleased in 2012, and its $634 million in revenue.
It now has a score of 640 million, thanks to the $6 million raised on Japanese soil. In total, the Oppenheimer Box Office today it stands at $968 million, the third biggest success of the director’s career, behind one billion The dark Knight AND The Dark Knight Rises.
