Game of Thrones: Jon Snow’s spin-off will not see the light of day
After the arrest game of Thrones in 2019, HBO started thinking about several spin-offs around the universe imagined by George RR Martin, to continue to benefit from this saga (very) profitable. The first project to be announced was a series set during the White Walkers’ first arrival in Westeros. Led by Naomi Watts, this spin-off ultimately did not see the light of day, after filming of the pilot was deemed unsatisfactory by the American channel (but the first images were leaked recently).
The second project started by HBO was House of the Dragon, the prequel series focusing on the war of succession within the Targaryen family. The first season released in summer 2022 was a huge successand season 2 is scheduled for next June.
Other projects currently in development include a series project about Aegon Targaryen’s conquest, another set a century before the events of the original series, called A knight of the Seven Kingdoms. and there was the famous Jon Snow spin-off, which was supposed to take place after the events from the end of game of Thrones, while the character left to take over the Night’s Watch. Unfortunately the series will never see the light of day.
Kit Harington explains
In a recent interview with ScreenRant, Kit Harington explained that the Jon Snow series was no longer in development at HBO. The reason given is that the channel couldn’t find the right story to tell:
“I never really talked about it because the project was in development. I wanted to avoid leaks that would reveal its existence and I also didn’t want to trigger this speculation where everyone starts having ideas, hoping or decrying the concept, when it may never happen. When we develop a project, we examine all possibilities to determine whether it is worth it.
And for now the answer is no. The project is currently on hold because we couldn’t find a story that excited us enough. We have therefore chosen to suspend the project for the time being. It may be that in the future we decide to bring it back, but at the moment this is not the case. It stays neat on the shelf.”
Kit Harington, currently busy promoting his new film, said: Blood for dust.
Do without George RR Martin
The challenge for HBO regarding this Game of Thrones spin-off dedicated to Jon Snow is essentially that this story is not based on previously published writings by George RR Martin. The authors must therefore imagine from A to Z what happens to the character after the events of the end of the seriesUnlike House of the Dragon which is based on the two volumes of Fire and bloodOR A knight of the Seven Kingdomswhich is also a collection of the author’s short stories published in 2015.
