Anthracite: what sordid true story inspired the Netflix series?

Anthracite: the new French series that is popular on Netflix

Just 24 hours after its arrival on Netflix, the series Anthracite, a new French creation on the platform, has risen directly to first place among the most watched programs in France. This six-episode miniseries takes place in the small fictional town of Levionna in the Alps. It was in these snowy settings that, in 1994, a collective suicide by members of a cult made headlines.

Thirty years later, while many mysteries remain surrounding this story, a new disappearance brings back demons from the past.

The Netflix series follows a police officer (Camille Lou), an investigator 2.0 searching for his father (Noémie Schmidt), and a young delinquent looking for redemption (Hatik), as they all try to find the truth about these inexplicable events which throw the small village into chaos.

Very real inspirations behind the series

At the helm ofAnthracitewe find the co-creator of Profiling, Fanny Robert, as well as Maxime Berthemy, also screenwriter of the TF1 series. Both are big fans of true crime programs, especially Netflix ones, as they revealed in an interview with our colleagues at Pure media. It is therefore completely logical that at the origin ofAnthracitethere’s a real and sordid newsas inspiration: that of collective suicide of the members of the Solar Temple sectin a forest in the Vercors, in 1995, which caused the death of sixteen people, including children.

This tragedy deeply affected the French of the 1990s and in particular its creator, who grew up near Grenoble, not far from the site of the tragedy. As in the Netflix series, this sect was led by a manipulative guru, who exercised considerable psychological control over his disciples, manipulating them and making them believe that he was the author of miracles and prophecies.

In addition to the Solar Temple sect, which inspired the Écrins Sect of the series, the two creators were also interested in the phenomenon of “web detectives”, these amateur detectives, who try to solve unsolved criminal cases, and share everything on online forums like in the US, where the best known among them, websleuths.com It has almost 230,000 members. These detectives 2.0 who sometimes manage to solve unsolved cases (sometimes confuse the police) inspired the character of Ida, played by Noémie Schmidt.
