Asterix and Obelix on a mission to Great Britain

After three first works released in 1999, 2002 and 2008, the most famous Gauls on the planet returned to the big screen in 2012 for a fourth part of the saga entitled Asterix and Obelix: In His Majesty’s Service. Directed by Laurent Tirard, this is Gérard Depardieu’s last appearance in the role of Obélix. And the first (and only) of Edouard Baer in that of Asterix.

Based again on the work of René Goscinny and Albert Uderzo, this fourth film mixes the plots of two albums in the series, Asterix among the Bretons AND Asterix among the Normans.

The film begins with the Roman emperor Julius Caesar, played by Fabrice Luchini, who continues his conquests and decides to invade Brittany, one of the few regions that still resists the Roman Empire. The Bretons, led by Queen Cordelia (played by Catherine Deneuve), resist valiantly, but find themselves in difficulty in the face of the advancing Roman legions.

Faced with this threat, the Breton leader Jolitorax (Guillaume Gallienne) decides to ask for help from his Gallic cousins, famous for their resistance to the Romans thanks to their magic potion which gives them superhuman strength. Jolitorax therefore goes to the Gallic village, where he meets Asterix and Obelix. The latter agree to help him and leave for Brittany with a barrel full of magic potion.

At the same time, Asterix and Obélix are tasked with watching over Goudurix (Vincent Lacoste), nephew of the chief Abraracourcix, who is more interested in music and girls than in fighting. However, the journey serves as training for Goudurix, who must learn to become a true Gallic warrior.

A success but the worst result of the saga

When it was released in cinemas, Asterix and Obelix: On Her Majesty’s Service was better received than the previous work, Asterix at the Olympic Games, without however managing to completely seduce the public. Produced on an estimated budget of 61 million euros, the film attracted attention almost four million spectators in theaters. Although it is an honorable score, it is still the worst score in the saga:

  • Asterix and Obelix against Caesar : 9 million entries
  • Asterix and Obelix: Mission Cleopatra : 14 million entries
  • Asterix at the Olympic Games : 7 million entries
  • Asterix and Obelix: In His Majesty’s Service : 3.8 million entries
  • Asterix and Obelix: The Middle Kingdom : 4.5 million entries
