A sordid true story at the origin of the series

In an interview given to Hello magazineRichard Gadd revealed the disturbing circumstances that fueled the creation of this series, and returned to the true story of the harassment he suffered:

“Somehow she had got my phone number and I was at a key point in my career. I had just returned from the Edinburgh Fringe Festival where I had won the comedy award for ‘Monkey See Monkey Do’. A show that tackled the theme sexual abuse I suffered in my early days in the industry. It was a great moment for me to reveal what had happened after so many years of suffering in silence, a period of professional recognition, however, was overshadowed by constant harassment the Fringe was tempered. from my phone ringing every minute of every day, where I had to deal with the full range of Martha’s emotions, hurling insults to deep expressions of love and longing that were too much to bear.

The series also highlights the complex relationship between Richard Gadd and his stalker. In another interview with the Guardian in 2019, the latter clarified:

“It would be unfair to say that she was a horrible person and I was a victim. It didn’t feel real. I made a lot of mistakes and made the situation worse. I wasn’t perfect at the time, so there’s no point in pretending that I was. And I know that , doing these scenes, people think I’m not a good person, which makes them difficult to play.”

As for Martha, as Gadd revealed in 2019, she was banned from contacting him, but found ways to harass his friends and family. “He needs help, but he doesn’t get it” confided the actor.
