The Jungle Book revisited by Jon Favreau

In 2016 Jon Favreau tackles the famous novel by Rudyard Kipling, The Jungle Book, already adapted into an animated cartoon by Disney in 1967. The film combines real footage and computer-generated images to recreate the lush world of the Indian jungle and its animals. Inspired by the animated film, Favreau wanted to remain faithful to the spirit of the book while introducing a visual and emotional dimension deeper and more realistic.

The film follows the story of Mowgli (Neel Sethi), a young boy raised by a pack of wolves in the Indian jungle after being found abandoned. Guided by the wise panther Bagheera and the protective bear Baloo, Mowgli learns the laws of the jungle as he faces his challenges as a human. The plot becomes complicated with the arrival of the fearsome tiger Shere Khan, who sees Mowgli as a threat and wants to eliminate him. Mowgli’s journey presents itself as both a search for identity and a fight for survival.

A technological company

The technology is probably the most revolutionary aspect of this film. Using advanced motion capture and CGI (Computer Generated Imagery) techniques, The Jungle Book it immerses us in a completely digital and surprisingly realistic environment. The animals were animated with detailed precisionhighlighting subtle nuances in their movements and facial expressions reminiscent of the latest trilogy of The Planet of the Apes. The film was shot mainly in the studio against blue backgrounds, to create total immersion in this world. Three years later, Favreau repeats the feat by staging an ultra-realistic version of another cult Disney cartoon: The Lion King.

Upon his exit, The Jungle Book it was a huge success global box office, for a total of over $966 million. In France the film has accumulated almost four million entriesthe ninth biggest hit of the year 2016. The film also won the Oscar for Best Visual Effects during the 2017 ceremony. Only two other live action Disney films have won a statuette: Alice in Wonderland AND The beauty and the Beast.
